How to Arrange PDF Pages in Order (Online, Free, iPhone too)

To arrange PDF pages in order, open organize PDF, choose your file and wait for thumbnails of every page. Move a page left or right with the ← and → buttons under it, rotate it with ⟳, or remove it with ✕. When everything is in place, press Save PDF and download. It is free, has no page limit beyond what your device can handle, and the file is processed in your browser rather than uploaded.

For bigger jobs, such as reversing a 30-page scan, typing the order is faster than clicking. Both methods are below.

Method 1: organize PDF pages visually

Best for a handful of pages that are out of place.

1. Open organize PDF and choose the PDF.
2. Wait while the thumbnails load. Each shows its original page number, such as "Page 4".
3. Use ← to move a page one place earlier and → to move it one place later.
4. Click ⟳ to rotate a page 90° clockwise (click again for 180° or 270°).
5. Click ✕ to remove blank or duplicate pages.
6. Press Save PDF and download the "-organized" copy.

The thumbnails keep their original page numbers as labels, so you can always tell which page is which while you move them around.

Method 2: type the page order

When many pages need moving, extract PDF pages is quicker. You type the order you want, and it builds a new PDF in exactly that sequence.

• 1, 3, 2, 4-10 swaps pages 2 and 3.
• 5-10, 1-4 moves the first four pages to the end.
• 1, 2, 2, 3 duplicates page 2.
• Leaving a page out of the list removes it.

Ranges must go upwards (4-10, not 10-4), but single pages can be in any order.

How to reverse PDF page order

A sheet-feed scanner or a phone scan done from the back of a stack often gives pages in reverse. To flip a 10-page file, open extract PDF pages and type:

10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

The new PDF runs from the original last page to the first. This is how to arrange a PDF in descending order; ascending order is the normal page order, so a list like 1-10 restores it.

Fixing a double-sided scan

A common mess: you scan the fronts of five sheets, flip the stack, and scan the backs. The PDF now has fronts as pages 1–5 and backs as pages 6–10 in reverse (the back of sheet 5 comes first). The correct reading order alternates front, back, front, back.

For five sheets, type this into extract PDF pages:

1, 10, 2, 9, 3, 8, 4, 7, 5, 6

The pattern is: first front, last page, second front, second-to-last page, and so on. If your backs were scanned in the same order as the fronts (not reversed), use 1, 6, 2, 7, 3, 8, 4, 9, 5, 10 instead.

After that, remove any blank back sides with delete PDF pages, for example 4, 8.

Rotating sideways or upside-down pages

Scans of landscape certificates often come out sideways. You can rotate single pages in organize PDF with ⟳. To rotate many at once, use rotate PDF:

• Leave Pages empty to rotate every page.
• Type pages like 2, 4-6 to rotate only those.
• Choose 90° clockwise, 180° or 90° anticlockwise.

The rotation is saved in the file, so it stays fixed when someone else opens it.

Arranging pages across several PDFs

If the pages are spread over separate files, combine them first with merge PDF, putting the files in rough order with ↑ and ↓. Then fine-tune individual pages in organize PDF. Our guide on merging, splitting and reordering PDF pages walks through more combinations.

If some of your pages are photos rather than PDFs, convert them with JPG to PDF first, then merge.

How to reorder PDF pages on iPhone and Android

Both methods work in a phone browser.

• iPhone: open organize PDF in Safari, tap to choose a file and pick Browse to find the PDF in Files. Rearrange and save; the result goes to Files > Downloads. Apple's Files app also lets you rotate or delete pages from the page thumbnails in recent iOS versions, but the browser tool gives you clearer control over order.
• Android: open the tool in Chrome, choose the PDF from Downloads or Drive, arrange and save. The new file lands in Downloads.

On a small screen, the typed-order method with extract PDF pages is often easier than tapping arrows on tiny thumbnails.

Organize PDF without Adobe

Acrobat Pro has an Organize Pages view, and the free Acrobat Reader does not let you save reordered pages. Free alternatives:

• Our browser tools: work on Windows, Mac, Linux and phones.
• Mac Preview: choose View > Thumbnails, drag thumbnails into a new order in the sidebar, and save. This is a good built-in option on a Mac.

After arranging: check before you send

• Scroll through the whole PDF once. It is easy to miss one page in the wrong place.
• Add page numbers last with add page numbers to PDF, so they follow the final order.
• Compress if needed. Reordering does not change the file size much. If it is over an upload limit, compress it afterwards.

Common mistakes

• Saving over the only copy. The tools always give you a new file, but if you then delete the original and spot an error, you have to start again. Keep the original until you have checked.
• Reversed ranges. Typing 10-1 gives an error; list the pages individually instead.
• Rotating in the viewer instead of the file. Rotating a page in a PDF reader often only changes your view. Use rotate PDF so the change is saved.
• Numbering pages before reordering. Page numbers are drawn on the page and move with it, so numbers end up out of sequence.
