How to Rotate a PDF File and Save It Permanently (Free)

Rotate all pages or just one page of a PDF and save it so it stays fixed. Free on laptop or mobile, no Acrobat, no upload.

· 4 min read

To rotate a PDF file and save it, open rotate PDF, choose your file, pick 90° clockwise, 180° or 90° anticlockwise, and press Rotate PDF. Download the new file and the rotation is saved permanently: it will open the right way up on any phone, laptop or portal. Leave the Pages box empty to rotate every page, or type page numbers like 2, 4-6 to rotate only those. It is free, runs in your browser, and the file is not uploaded.

Sideways pages are common with phone scans and with documents where one landscape table sits among portrait pages. A reviewer opening a sideways certificate has to tilt their head or may simply reject it, so fixing it before you upload is worth the minute it takes.

Rotate a PDF and save: step by step

  1. Open rotate PDF and choose the PDF. You will see its page count.
  2. Choose the angle. 90° clockwise turns the top of the page to the right; 90° anticlockwise turns it to the left; 180° flips an upside-down page.
  3. Choose the pages (optional). Empty means all pages. Type 3 for one page, or 1, 5-7 for a mix.
  4. Press Rotate PDF and download the file, which ends in -rotated.pdf.
  5. Open it to check. If a page is now the wrong way, run it again on that page with the other direction.

Rotation adds to whatever the page already has, so a page that was already turned 90° and gets another 90° ends up at 180°.

Rotate PDF pages one by one

If different pages need different turns (page 2 clockwise, page 5 anticlockwise, page 7 upside down), it is quicker to see them:

  1. Open organize PDF and choose the file.
  2. Wait for the page thumbnails.
  3. Tap ⟳ under each page that needs fixing. Each tap turns it 90° clockwise, so tap twice for 180° or three times for 90° anticlockwise. The thumbnail turns as you go.
  4. Reorder or remove pages here too if you need to.
  5. Press Save PDF.

With rotate PDF you can also do this in a few passes: rotate page 2 clockwise, then run the result again with page 5 anticlockwise.

Why rotation sometimes does not stick

Most PDF viewers can rotate a page on screen, but many do it for viewing only:

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader has View > Rotate View, which is temporary and is not saved with the file.
  • Browser PDF viewers often have a rotate button that only affects the current view.

So the file looks fixed on your screen, but when you upload it, the portal shows it sideways again. To rotate a PDF permanently, you need a tool that writes the rotation into the file and gives you a new copy to save. Our rotate PDF tool does that by setting each page's orientation inside the PDF, which every viewer respects.

Rotate a PDF in a laptop

On Windows or a Chromebook, the browser method above is the simplest. Drag the PDF onto the page, rotate, download.

On a Mac, Preview can also rotate and save:

  1. Open the PDF in Preview.
  2. Choose View > Thumbnails and select the page or pages to turn.
  3. Choose Tools > Rotate Left or Tools > Rotate Right (Command + L or Command + R).
  4. Choose File > Save, or File > Export as PDF to keep the original unchanged.

Rotate a PDF in mobile

Open rotate PDF in Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone. Tap Choose a PDF and pick the file from Downloads or the Files app. After rotating, tap Download; on Android it goes to Downloads, and on iPhone to Files, in the Downloads folder by default.

If you scanned the document with your phone, it is often easier to fix orientation in the scanner app before saving. Our guide on scanning documents with your phone has tips that avoid sideways pages in the first place.

Rotating images before they become a PDF

If you are building a PDF from photos, rotate the photos first with rotate image, then combine them with JPG to PDF. Or make the PDF first and fix any sideways pages afterwards with organize PDF; either order works.

Rotate, then merge

When you need to combine several documents and some of them are sideways, rotate the problem file first, then combine everything with merge PDF. If you merge first, you can still fix pages afterwards in organize PDF. Either way, a final scroll through the merged file catches anything you missed. The guide on merging PDF and JPG files walks through combining mixed files.

Does rotation change the file?

Rotation changes only the orientation setting of each page. The content is not re-rendered, so:

  • Text stays selectable and sharp.
  • Image quality is unchanged.
  • The file size stays about the same.

Common mistakes

  • Rotating the view instead of the file. If you rotated in a PDF reader and saved nothing, the file is still sideways.
  • Rotating every page when only one was wrong. Type the page number, or use organize PDF.
  • Picking the wrong direction. If the page turned the wrong way, rotate that page 180°.
  • Uploading the original. The rotated copy ends in -rotated.pdf. Rename it before uploading so you do not mix them up.

Questions

How do I rotate a PDF and save it permanently?

Open Rotate PDF, choose the file and the angle, and press Rotate PDF. Download the new file. The rotation is written into the PDF itself, so it opens the right way up on any device.

How do I rotate only one page of a PDF?

Type that page number in the Pages box of Rotate PDF, for example 3, and choose the angle. Or open Organize PDF and tap the rotate button under that page only.

Why does my PDF go back to sideways after I rotate it?

Your viewer probably rotated the view only. Many readers, including Adobe Acrobat Reader's Rotate View, do not save the change. Use a tool that saves a rotated copy instead.

How do I rotate a PDF on my phone?

Open Rotate PDF in Chrome or Safari, choose the PDF from Downloads or Files, pick the angle, and download the rotated copy. No app is needed.

Does rotating a PDF reduce its quality?

No. Rotation only changes the page's orientation setting; the content is not re-rendered, so text and images stay exactly as sharp.
