To add page numbers to a PDF from a specific page, use the Skip first pages and Start at settings in add page numbers to PDF. Skip tells the tool how many opening pages to leave blank (cover, title page, contents), and Start at sets the number that appears on the first numbered page. For example, skip 2 and start at 1 to put "1" on the third page of the file. It is free and you do not need Acrobat.

Below are the exact settings for the most common cases, plus what to do when you need something the tool does not do directly.

Step by step

  1. Open add page numbers to PDF and choose your PDF. The page count is shown under the button.
  2. Set the options:
    • Position: bottom center, bottom right, bottom left, top center or top right.
    • Format: 1, Page 1, Page 1 of 10 or 1 / 10.
    • Start at: the number printed on the first numbered page.
    • Font size: 11 by default; 9–12 suits most documents.
    • Skip first pages: how many pages at the start get no number.
  3. Press Add page numbers and download the numbered PDF.
  4. Open it and check a few pages, especially the first numbered one and the last one.

The file is processed in your browser, so a thesis, contract or internal report never leaves your computer. Your original file is not changed; you get a new copy.

Settings for common situations

What you want Skip first pages Start at Result
Number every page from 1 0 1 Page 1 shows "1"
Skip the cover, number from 1 1 1 Page 2 shows "1"
Skip cover and contents, start at 1 2 1 Page 3 shows "1"
Skip the cover but count it 1 2 Page 2 shows "2"
Continue from an earlier file (pages 41 onward) 0 41 Page 1 shows "41"
Front matter skipped, real page numbers kept 4 5 Page 5 shows "5"

The difference between "skip the cover, number from 1" and "skip the cover but count it" trips many people up. Think about whether your reader expects the cover to be page 1. Books and reports usually do not count it; printed office documents often do.

Page X of Y

Choose Page 1 of 10 or 1 / 10 as the format. The tool calculates the total for you, and it only counts the pages that actually get a number. If your PDF has 12 pages and you skip 2, the numbered pages show "Page 1 of 10" through "Page 10 of 10".

If you also change Start at, the total moves with it. Skip 2 and start at 3 on that same 12-page file, and the pages read "Page 3 of 12" through "Page 12 of 12", which matches the real page positions.

Choosing the position

  • Bottom center is the classic choice for reports, assignments and theses.
  • Bottom right suits documents that will be read on screen, and printed single-sided.
  • Top right works for legal or office documents that have a footer you do not want to cover.

Numbers are placed a small distance from the edge of the page. If your PDF already has a footer, logo or text close to the bottom, check that the number does not overlap it. If it does, switch to a top position or a different corner.

Numbering only part of a PDF

The tool numbers every page from the first unskipped page to the end. If you need numbers on a middle section only, for example chapters but not the appendix at the end, split the document, number the part you want, and put it back together:

  1. Use split PDF with Custom ranges, for example 1-2, 3-40, 41-48.
  2. Add page numbers to the middle file only.
  3. Recombine the three files in order with merge PDF.

The same trick handles documents that need two numbering schemes. Number each part separately with its own Start at value, then merge.

Fix the page order before numbering

Numbers are drawn onto the pages, so they move with the page. If you number first and reorder later, the numbers end up out of sequence. Always:

  1. Merge all parts into one PDF.
  2. Put the pages in the right order and remove blanks with organize PDF.
  3. Add the page numbers last.

Our guide to arranging PDF pages in order covers the reordering step.

Add page numbers to PDF without Acrobat

Adobe Acrobat Pro can add page numbers through its header and footer feature, but the free Acrobat Reader cannot. Free alternatives:

  • A browser tool like ours: works on any operating system and on phones.
  • Your original document: if the PDF came from Word or Google Docs, adding page numbers there and exporting a new PDF often gives the neatest result, because the numbers use the document's own fonts and footer layout.
  • Mac Preview has no page numbering feature, so use one of the options above.

Things the tool does not do

To be clear about the limits:

  • Numbers use a standard font (Helvetica) in dark grey; you choose the size, not the font or colour.
  • There is no Roman numeral format (i, ii, iii). Use the split and merge method and number the front matter in your original document if you need it.
  • It numbers every page after the skipped ones; it cannot skip pages in the middle or at the end.
  • Numbers cannot be removed afterwards. Keep the original.

Common mistakes

  • Numbering before merging. Each file starts again at 1. Merge first.
  • Forgetting the blank back pages of a scan. Delete them with delete PDF pages before numbering, or they will be counted.
  • Covering existing text. Check the bottom edge on a few pages.
  • Compressing after numbering and expecting sharp numbers. Compression turns pages into images. Small numbers stay readable, but use a font size of at least 10 if you will compress the file afterwards.

Questions

How do I add page numbers to a PDF starting from page 3?

In the add page numbers tool, set Skip first pages to 2 so the first two pages stay unnumbered. Then set Start at to 1 if page 3 should show 1, or to 3 if it should show 3.

How do I add Page X of Y to a PDF?

Choose the Page 1 of 10 format (or 1 / 10). The total is worked out automatically from the pages that get numbered, so skipped cover pages are not counted.

How can I add page numbers to a PDF without Acrobat?

Use a browser-based tool. Choose the PDF, pick the position, format, start number and pages to skip, then download the numbered copy. It works on Windows, Mac and phones.

Can I remove page numbers from a PDF after adding them?

Not easily, because the numbers are drawn onto the pages. Keep your original file, and if you need to change the numbering, start again from the original.
