Expected timeline

  1. By mid-June 2027 (expected)

    Form 16 from employer

For FY 2025-26, employers had to issue Form 16 by 15 June 2026. Some guides say the form gets a new number under the 2025 Act.

  2. 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027

    Tax year covered

The Income-tax Act, 2025 applies to income from 1 April 2026, so returns filed in 2027 are the first under the new Act, for tax year 2026-27.

  3. 31 July 2027 (expected)

Due date: salaried and other non-audit individuals (ITR-1/ITR-2 type)

The due date was 31 July 2026 for AY 2026-27, and coverage of the 2025 bill said the 31 July date was kept.

  4. 31 August 2027 (expected)

Due date: non-audit business and professional cases (ITR-3/ITR-4 type)

For AY 2026-27 this due date was moved from 31 July to 31 August 2026.

  5. 31 October 2027 (expected; extensions happen)

    Due date: tax audit cases

The AY 2026-27 date was 31 October 2026, and a CBDT circular of 28 September 2026 was reported to extend it to 21 November 2026.

  6. 31 December 2027 / 31 March 2028 (expected)

    Belated and revised returns

For AY 2026-27 the belated return date was 31 December 2026, and the revised return date was moved to 31 March 2027.

If you will file your income tax return in 2027, the due date for most salaried people is expected to be 31 July 2027. Non-audit business and professional cases are expected by 31 August 2027, and audit cases by 31 October 2027. This will be the first filing under the Income-tax Act, 2025, for tax year 2026-27 (1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027). The return itself needs no attachments, but having your documents as clean PDFs makes filing, and any later notice, much easier.

Expected due dates for returns filed in 2027

These are based on the dates for AY 2026-27 (filed in 2026). The government confirms dates each year and sometimes extends them. For example, a CBDT circular was reported to move the 2026 audit-case date from 31 October to 21 November.

Type of taxpayer Expected due date Basis (2026)
Salary, pension, interest, capital gains (ITR-1/ITR-2 type) 31 July 2027 31 July 2026
Business or profession, no audit (ITR-3/ITR-4 type) 31 August 2027 Moved to 31 August in 2026

Form names and numbers may change under the new Act. Use the forms and utilities published on incometax.gov.in for tax year 2026-27.

Documents to collect

Home loan interest certificate Lender Interest deduction (old regime)
Investment and insurance proofs Insurer, PPF, ELSS Deductions (old regime)

Under the new tax regime most deductions are not available. You still need Form 16, the AIS and capital gains statements.

Turning everything into tidy PDFs

Photos of paper receipts. Rent receipts and donation slips are often only on paper. Photograph each one flat in good light and combine them with JPG to PDF. For mixed PNG and JPG images, use image to PDF.

One file per year. Put Form 16, the AIS, interest certificates and statements together with merge PDF. Name it by tax year, for example "TY-2026-27-tax-documents.pdf".

Sending to a CA or uploading in a response. If an email or portal rejects a large file, use compress PDF. To share only some pages of a long bank statement, use split PDF.

All of these tools run in your browser, so your Form 16 and bank statements are not uploaded to any server.

Common mistakes

  • Filing before checking the AIS. Mismatches between the AIS and your return are a common reason for notices.
  • Forgetting savings account or FD interest.
  • Not e-verifying the return. A return that is not verified in time is treated as not filed.
  • Mixing up years. The 2027 filing covers income from April 2026 to March 2027.
  • Waiting for an extension. Extensions for individuals are rare, and late returns carry a fee.

Questions

What is the ITR due date in 2027?

For most salaried people it is expected to be 31 July 2027, as in 2026. Non-audit business and professional cases are expected on 31 August 2027 and audit cases on 31 October 2027. The government confirms or extends these each year.

Do I need to upload documents when filing ITR?

Usually no. The return form does not ask you to attach Form 16 or proofs. Keep them safely for at least several years, because you may need them if the department sends a notice or asks for proof.

What changes in 2027 under the new Income-tax Act?

Returns filed in 2027 cover tax year 2026-27, the first year under the Income-tax Act, 2025. The term 'tax year' replaces 'previous year' and 'assessment year', and some forms and section numbers change. Check the forms on incometax.gov.in when they are released.

What if I miss the 31 July deadline?

You can usually file a belated return by 31 December of the same year, with a late fee and interest on any unpaid tax. Some benefits, such as carrying forward certain losses, can be lost.
