How to Change iPhone Photos from HEIC to JPG (and Stop HEIC)
Switch your iPhone camera to JPG with the Most Compatible setting, convert existing HEIC photos to JPG on PC or phone, and keep the quality high.
To change iPhone photos from HEIC to JPG, go to Settings > Camera > Formats and select Most Compatible. From then on, the camera saves photos as JPG. Photos already in your library stay HEIC, so convert those separately with HEIC to JPG, which works on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac without uploading anything.
That covers most people. The rest of this guide explains what the setting changes, how to convert existing HEIC photos on a PC or phone, and how iPhone transfers already convert some photos for you.
Step 1: stop the iPhone saving photos as HEIC
- Open Settings.
- Tap Camera, then Formats.
- Under Camera Capture, choose Most Compatible.
The other option, High Efficiency, is the default. It saves photos as HEIC and videos as HEVC, which take roughly half the storage of JPG and H.264 at similar quality.
What changes when you choose Most Compatible
- Photos save as JPG, which every website, PC and form accepts.
- Files are larger. Expect your photos to take noticeably more storage and iCloud space.
- Videos save as H.264 instead of HEVC. Some video modes, such as certain high frame rate or high resolution options, are only available with High Efficiency. If a video option disappears after switching, that is why.
If you only need JPG occasionally, for example to upload an exam photo, you may prefer to keep High Efficiency and convert the few photos you need. HEIC saves a lot of space over thousands of photos.
Step 2: convert existing HEIC photos to JPG
Changing the setting does not touch photos you already took. To convert them:
On iPhone
- In Photos, select the picture and use Share > Save to Files to save a copy in the Files app.
- Open HEIC to JPG in Safari.
- Tap Choose images, pick the file from Files (or directly from your photo library) and download the JPG.
The JPG saves to Files, in Downloads by default. From there you can attach it to a form or save it back to Photos.
HEIC to JPG on a Windows PC
- Copy the photos from your iPhone to the PC (cable, iCloud for Windows, a cloud drive or email).
- Open HEIC to JPG in Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
- Drag in one or many HEIC files and download the JPGs, individually or as a ZIP.
This needs no Microsoft Store extensions, because the converter decodes HEIC inside the page. The first file takes a few seconds while the converter loads. Our HEIC vs JPG guide explains how to view HEIC on Windows if you also want thumbnails in File Explorer.
On a Mac
Macs open HEIC natively. To get a JPG, open the photo in Preview, choose File > Export, set Format to JPEG and save. In the Photos app, choose File > Export, pick the regular export option (not Export Unmodified Original), and set Photo Kind to JPEG.
On Android
Open the converter in Chrome, pick the HEIC file from Files or Downloads, and download the JPG.
Let the iPhone convert for you when transferring
Your iPhone already converts HEIC to JPG in many situations:
- Cable transfer to a computer: under Settings > Photos > Transfer to Mac or PC, the Automatic option sends compatible formats (usually JPG) when it detects the computer may need them. Keep Originals sends HEIC.
- Sharing to apps: many apps and messaging services receive a JPG, often resized.
- Email: attachments are often sent as JPG, and the Mail app may offer to reduce the image size.
- AirDrop to a Mac and many cloud uploads keep the original HEIC.
The exact behaviour depends on the app and iOS version, so check the file extension where it lands. If you need full resolution for a print or a form, transfer the original and convert it yourself, so you control the quality.
HEIC to JPG without losing quality
JPG is a lossy format, so conversion re-compresses the image. In practice:
- Our converter saves at 92% quality, which looks the same as the HEIC on screen.
- The JPG is usually larger than the HEIC, because HEIC compresses more efficiently.
- For a lossless copy to edit, use HEIC to PNG. The PNG keeps every decoded pixel but is several times bigger.
The converter does not keep the photo's EXIF metadata (location, camera settings, date) in the new file. For forms and sharing that is often a plus; if you need the metadata, export from Photos or Preview on a Mac instead.
Using converted photos on forms
Indian exam and government portals almost always ask for JPG or JPEG with a size limit. After converting:
- Crop to the right framing with crop image.
- Reduce to the KB limit with compress image or a target tool such as compress image to 50 KB.
- For exact pixel and KB requirements together, use the exam photo resizer, which accepts HEIC directly and outputs JPG.
Common mistakes
- Renaming
.heicto.jpg. The file is still HEIC inside and will be rejected. - Expecting old photos to change. Most Compatible only affects new photos.
- Converting a low-resolution preview from iCloud. Make sure the full original has downloaded first.
- Forgetting Live Photos. Converting gives you the still image only, which is usually what you want.
- Switching permanently when you rarely need JPG. If storage is tight, keep HEIC and convert on demand.
Change one setting for JPG going forward, and convert the old ones in a browser. That is all it takes to get iPhone photos onto any PC, phone or form.
Questions
How do I change my iPhone camera from HEIC to JPG?
Go to Settings > Camera > Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG. Photos you already took stay HEIC until you convert them.
Does Most Compatible reduce photo quality?
Not visibly. JPG files take more storage for similar quality, so the main cost is space. Some video modes, such as high frame rate 4K, need High Efficiency, so check your video options after switching.
How do I convert HEIC to JPG on a PC?
Open a HEIC to JPG converter in Chrome, Edge or Firefox, drag in the photos and download the JPGs. Nothing needs to be installed, and the photos are converted on your computer.
Can I convert HEIC to JPG without losing quality?
JPG is lossy, but at the default 92% quality the difference is not visible. If you need a lossless copy for editing, convert to PNG instead, which is larger.
Does AirDrop or email convert HEIC to JPG automatically?
It depends on the destination. iPhones often send JPG when sharing to apps or devices that may not support HEIC, while AirDrop to a Mac and many cloud uploads keep the original HEIC. Check the file extension after it arrives.
