HEIC vs JPG: Open and Convert iPhone Photos on Windows & Android

What HEIC is, why your iPhone uses it, how to open HEIC on Windows and Android, and how to convert it to JPG for forms and sharing.

· 4 min read

HEIC is the photo format iPhones use by default. It stores photos in roughly half the space of a JPG with similar quality, but many websites, exam portals and older computers cannot open it. To use an iPhone photo anywhere outside Apple devices, the simplest fix is to convert it to JPG with a tool like our HEIC to JPG converter. To view HEIC files directly, recent Windows 11 and most current Android phones can open them, sometimes with an extra add-on.

HEIC vs JPG in one table

HEIC JPG
Typical file size Smaller (often about half) Larger
Quality at same size Better Good
Supports transparency, depth data, bursts Yes No
Opens on iPhone and Mac Yes Yes
Opens on Windows Recent versions, may need extensions Always
Opens on Android Most recent phones Always
Accepted by exam and govt portals Rarely Almost always

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is based on the HEIF standard and uses the same compression family as HEVC video. Apple switched to it in iOS 11 to save storage.

How to open HEIC on Windows

Windows 11 (recent versions): In many cases you can double-click a HEIC file and it opens in the Photos app. If it does not, or it shows a message about a missing codec, open the Microsoft Store and install HEIF Image Extensions. Some systems also need HEVC Video Extensions to decode HEIC photos, despite the name. The HEVC extension has been a small paid item on many PCs, though some computers come with it already installed.

Windows 10: Install the same extensions from the Microsoft Store. After that, Photos and File Explorer thumbnails should work.

If you only need a JPG copy and do not want to install anything, convert the file in a browser instead. Open HEIC to JPG, drag the photos onto the page and download the JPGs. The conversion runs on your computer, so the photos are not uploaded.

How to open HEIC on Android

Most phones running Android 10 or later can display HEIC photos in their gallery app, but support depends on the manufacturer. If a HEIC file will not open:

  • Try Google Photos, which handles HEIC on most devices.
  • Or open the file in Chrome through a converter page, and save a JPG copy.

On older Android phones, conversion is usually the only reliable option.

How to convert HEIC to JPG

On a Windows PC or laptop

  1. Copy the photos from your iPhone (cable, cloud drive, or email).
  2. Open HEIC to JPG in your browser.
  3. Add one or many HEIC files and download the JPGs.

On Android

  1. Open the converter page in Chrome.
  2. Pick the HEIC file from Files or Downloads.
  3. Download the JPG, which saves to your Downloads folder.

On the iPhone itself

  • Change the default: Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible. Future photos save as JPG.
  • Convert existing photos: Save the photo to the Files app, then open a browser converter in Safari and pick it from there. You can also set Settings > Photos > Transfer to Mac or PC to Automatic, which sends JPG copies when you transfer over a cable.

HEIC to PNG: when is that better?

Choose HEIC to PNG if you need a lossless copy for editing, or if the image has transparency (for example, a cut-out subject from Photos). For everyday sharing and forms, JPG is smaller and more widely accepted.

Using iPhone photos on exam and job forms

Indian exam and government portals almost always ask for JPG/JPEG. A HEIC upload either fails or is rejected later. After converting:

  1. Crop to the required framing.
  2. Resize and compress to the KB limit with compress image or a target-size tool like compress image to 50 KB.
  3. Check that the file ends in .jpg or .jpeg.

Note that renaming photo.heic to photo.jpg does not convert it. The data inside is still HEIC, and the portal or viewer will fail to read it.

Moving iPhone photos to a Windows PC or Android phone

How you transfer the photos affects which format arrives:

  • Cable to Windows: By default, iPhones often convert to JPG during transfer (the Automatic setting under Settings > Photos > Transfer to Mac or PC). Choose Keep Originals if you want HEIC.
  • Email or messaging apps: Usually convert to JPG and often shrink the photo as well. Fine for sharing, not ideal if you need full resolution.
  • Cloud drives and AirDrop alternatives: Often keep the original HEIC. Check the file extension after downloading.
  • Sharing to an Android user: Many chat apps convert to JPG automatically, so they may never see a HEIC file.

If you need the best quality for a form or a print, transfer the original and convert it yourself, so you control the size.

Common mistakes

  • Renaming instead of converting, as above.
  • Converting a low-resolution preview. When copying from iCloud, make sure you download the original, not a thumbnail.
  • Losing photo orientation. Most converters respect the rotation tag, but if a photo comes out sideways, fix it with rotate image.
  • Forgetting Live Photos. A Live Photo is a still plus a short video. Converting gives you the still only, which is usually what you want.
  • Switching to Most Compatible permanently without need. HEIC saves a lot of storage. If you only occasionally need JPG, converting on demand may suit you better.

HEIC is a good format held back by compatibility. Keep it for your camera roll and convert to JPG whenever a photo needs to leave the Apple world.

Questions

Is HEIC better quality than JPG?

At the same file size, HEIC usually keeps more detail than JPG, which is why iPhones use it. The catch is compatibility: many websites, forms and older devices do not accept HEIC.

How do I stop my iPhone from saving photos as HEIC?

Go to Settings > Camera > Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG. Existing photos stay HEIC.

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

Slightly, because JPG is a lossy format, but at normal quality settings the difference is hard to see. Converted files are usually larger than the HEIC original.

Why does my HEIC photo turn into a JPG when I email it?

iPhones often convert HEIC to JPG automatically when sharing to apps or devices that may not support HEIC. Transfers over a cable or some cloud services keep the original HEIC.
