How to Compress Image Size in Mobile (Android & iPhone, No App)

Reduce photo size on Android or iPhone in your browser, no app needed. Hit an exact KB, handle HEIC, and send full-size photos on WhatsApp.

The easiest way to compress image size on mobile is to use a browser tool, so you do not need to install anything. Open compress image in Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone, choose the photo, and download the smaller copy. If a form needs an exact size, use a preset like compress image to 50 KB. The photo is processed on your phone and is never uploaded.

This works the same on any recent Android phone or iPhone, and it gives you something most phone galleries do not: control over the final size in KB.

How to compress image size in mobile: step by step

  1. Open the tool in your browser. Compress image for general use, or a KB preset such as 50 KB, 100 KB or 200 KB for forms.
  2. Tap Choose images. Your phone shows the photo library or file picker. You can pick one photo or several.
  3. Pick a mode. Quality lets you choose a percentage (70% is a good start). Target size lets you type an exact limit in KB or MB.
  4. Wait a moment. The new size appears next to the old one, with the percentage saved.
  5. Tap Download. If you picked several photos, a Download all (.zip) button appears too.

Compress image size in iPhone

On iPhone, Safari handles everything, but there are two things to know:

  • HEIC photos. iPhones save photos as HEIC by default to save space. Many websites and almost all Indian exam portals do not accept HEIC. The compress tools read HEIC and save a JPG, so compressing and converting happen together. If you just want the format changed at full size, use HEIC to JPG.
  • Where the file goes. Safari saves downloads to the Files app, in the Downloads folder, not to the Photos app. When a website asks you to upload, tap Browse or Choose File and pick it from Files.

If you would rather your iPhone saved JPG in the first place, go to Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos will then be JPG. Our HEIC vs JPG guide explains the trade-off.

Compress image size in Android

On Android, use Chrome or any modern browser. After you tap Download, the file lands in the Downloads folder, which you can see in the Files app (called Files by Google, My Files on Samsung, or similar on other brands).

Some Android gallery apps have their own resize option inside the editor or share menu, but they differ between brands and rarely let you choose an exact KB size. A browser tool behaves the same on every phone, which is handy if you are helping someone else.

When you upload to a form, choose the file from Files or Downloads rather than from Gallery or Photos. Otherwise it is easy to pick the original by mistake.

Without an app: why a browser tool is enough

People often search for how to compress image size without an app because they do not want to install something for a one-off form. A browser tool is enough because the compressing is plain image processing, the same work an app would do. Our tools run it in your phone's browser with JavaScript:

  • No install and no sign-up.
  • No upload, so it works on slow mobile data once the page has loaded.
  • The same page works on Android, iPhone, tablets and laptops.

What a browser tool cannot do well is process hundreds of very large photos at once on an older phone; it may get slow. For that, do them in smaller batches, or use a laptop.

Reduce image size in KB for exam and job forms

If the form gives a KB limit, use a target size, not a quality percentage. A quality setting gives different file sizes for different photos; a target always lands under the number.

For forms with exact pixel sizes or a minimum KB as well as a maximum (for example 20–50 KB), use the exam photo resizer. It crops, resizes and compresses in one step, and keeps the file above the minimum. Our guide to reducing photo size to 20 KB or 50 KB covers exam photos in more depth.

WhatsApp: compressed photo or document?

WhatsApp compresses photos you send the normal way, which makes them quicker to send but loses some detail. Recent versions also offer an HD option when sending a photo, which keeps more quality but is still compressed.

If you need the receiver to get your exact file, for example a photo you already compressed to a specific KB size for a form, send it as a document. In the chat, tap the attach icon, choose Document, and pick the file. WhatsApp then sends the file as it is, without re-compressing it.

The opposite case is also common: someone sent you a photo on WhatsApp, and you want to upload it to a form. The WhatsApp copy is already compressed and may be small in pixels. It will usually work for a form, but ask for the original if the face looks soft.

Choosing the right size on a phone

What you are doing Suggested setting
Exam or job form photo Target size from the notice, e.g. 50 KB
Signature upload Target size from the notice, e.g. 20 KB
Email attachment Target 1 MB or quality 70%
Sharing many holiday photos Quality 70–80%
Posting to your own website Target 200 KB or less

Common mistakes

  • Uploading from Photos instead of Files. The compressed copy is in Downloads, not your gallery.
  • Sending the HEIC original. Check the file name ends in .jpg before uploading to a portal.
  • Screenshotting the photo to make it smaller. A screenshot is usually a PNG and can be bigger, with the phone's status bar in it. Compress the original instead.
  • Compressing a WhatsApp copy again and again. Each round loses more detail. Start from the original photo if you can.

That is all most people need: one browser page, one photo, one download.
