PNG to PDF in High Quality: Screenshots, A4 & Merging

Convert PNG images and screenshots to a sharp, high quality PDF. Combine many PNGs into one file, choose A4 or no margins, and keep text crisp.

· 5 min read

For a high quality PNG to PDF conversion, use a converter that embeds the PNG losslessly, so no pixels are changed. PNG to PDF does exactly that: each PNG goes into the PDF as-is, which keeps screenshots, charts and diagrams pin-sharp. Choose your files, set page size and margins, and convert. You can combine as many PNGs as you like into one PDF.

The main choices are page size (A4, Letter, or the image's own size) and whether you need a smaller file. Those are covered below.

Why PNG to PDF can be lossless

PNG is a lossless format: it stores every pixel exactly. Many converters re-encode images as JPG when building a PDF, which adds slight blur and the familiar fuzzy "halo" around text. Our PNG to PDF tool skips that step and embeds the PNG data directly, so the PDF shows exactly the same pixels.

What this means in practice:

  • Text in screenshots stays crisp, with no smudging around letters.
  • Transparent areas come through as transparent; PDF viewers show them on a white page.
  • The file size is similar to the PNG files combined. Lossless has a price.

One thing a PDF cannot do is add detail that is not in the image. A small, low-resolution PNG will look blocky when zoomed or printed large, no matter how it is converted. If you are making the PNG yourself, export it at a higher resolution.

Step by step: PNG to PDF in high quality

  1. Open PNG to PDF and tap Choose PNG images.
  2. Select one or many PNG files. Add more later if needed.
  3. Arrange them with ↑ and ↓, and remove any with ✕.
  4. Pick a Page size:
    • A4 (or US Letter, Legal, A5) for documents you might print.
    • Same as image for screenshots and slides, so the page matches the image exactly with no border.
  5. Choose Orientation (Auto rotates the page for wide images) and Margin.
  6. Press Convert to PDF and download.

Everything runs in your browser. Screenshots of bank statements, chats or internal dashboards never leave your device.

PNG to PDF on A4 page size

A4 is the safe choice if the PDF might be printed or uploaded to a portal that expects documents. The image is centred and scaled to fit inside the margins, keeping its proportions. Tall phone screenshots will have white space on the sides, because a phone screen is much narrower than A4. Wide desktop screenshots look best with Orientation set to Auto or Landscape.

If you want an A4 PDF that fills the page edge to edge, the image itself must have roughly A4 proportions (about 1 : 1.41). Crop it first with crop image if needed.

Screenshots to PDF

Turning a batch of screenshots into one PDF is one of the most common reasons people convert PNGs, for example to submit proof of payment, an online course certificate, or a set of error screens for a support ticket.

  • Use Same as image page size so each screenshot fills its page.
  • Name or sort them before choosing, or fix the order in the list.
  • For phone screenshots taken on an iPhone, check that they are PNG. iPhone screenshots normally are, but photos are usually HEIC. If you have a mix of PNG, JPG and HEIC, use image to PDF instead, which accepts all of them in one PDF.

PNG to PDF merge: adding PNGs to an existing PDF

The converter combines several PNGs into one new PDF. To add PNG pages to a PDF you already have:

  1. Convert the PNGs to a PDF as above.
  2. Open merge PDF, add your existing PDF and the new one.
  3. Set the order and merge.

If the pages end up in the wrong place, organize PDF shows thumbnails of every page so you can move them. Our guide to merging, splitting and reordering PDF pages has more examples.

Making a high quality PDF smaller

Sometimes the PDF needs to be under a limit, such as 2 MB for a form or an email attachment that is getting refused. Options, from least to most quality loss:

  1. Compress the PNGs first with compress PNG. It reduces the number of colours, which works well for screenshots and diagrams, and the result is still a PNG embedded losslessly.
  2. Convert photo-like PNGs to JPG with PNG to JPG and then use JPG to PDF. Photos saved as PNG are often five to ten times bigger than the same photo as a good JPG.
  3. Compress the PDF with compress PDF. Choose "Light (best quality)" if you just need a modest reduction. This rebuilds pages as JPG images, so text becomes part of the picture and is no longer perfectly crisp.

For a document you intend to keep or print, keep a lossless copy and send a compressed one.

PNG to PDF on Mac and Windows without a website

Mac (Preview): Select the PNG files in Finder and open them together in Preview. In the sidebar, drag thumbnails into order. Then choose File > Print, click the PDF menu at the bottom of the print dialog and choose Save as PDF. For a single image, File > Export as PDF also works.

Windows: Select the PNGs in File Explorer, right-click and choose Print (on Windows 11 it may be under Show more options). Choose Microsoft Print to PDF as the printer, pick a layout such as "Full page photo", and print. Untick "Fit picture to frame" if you do not want edges cropped.

Both methods print through the system, which may scale images to the page. The browser tool keeps the original pixels and gives you control over page size and margins.

Common mistakes

  • Upscaling a small PNG first. Making a 600 px image 3000 px wide does not add detail; it only makes the file bigger.
  • Using A4 for wide screenshots in portrait. They end up tiny in the middle of the page. Use Auto or Landscape orientation, or Same as image.
  • Merging huge PNGs for email. A 40-page PDF of full-resolution screenshots can exceed 25 MB. Compress before sending.
  • Expecting selectable text. A PDF made from images contains pictures of text. You cannot search or copy it without OCR software.

Questions

How do I convert PNG to PDF without losing quality?

Use a converter that embeds PNGs losslessly, such as our PNG to PDF tool. The pixels go into the PDF unchanged, so screenshots and diagrams stay exactly as sharp as the original.

How do I combine multiple PNG files into one PDF?

Choose all the PNGs together in the PNG to PDF converter, arrange them with the arrow buttons and convert. You get one PDF with one PNG per page.

How do I convert PNG to PDF on Windows?

Select the PNGs in File Explorer, right-click and choose Print, then pick Microsoft Print to PDF as the printer. Or open a browser-based PNG to PDF tool and drop the files on it.

Why is my PNG to PDF file so large?

Lossless PNGs of photos or full-screen screenshots are big, and a lossless PDF keeps that size. If you need a smaller file, compress the PDF afterwards, or convert photo-like PNGs to JPG first.
