Convert PNG to JXL

Shrink PNGs with JPEG XL, losslessly or at a quality you choose, with transparency kept.

PNG files are lossless but large. JPEG XL has a lossless mode that typically makes screenshots and graphics 20–40% smaller than an optimised PNG with exactly the same pixels, and a lossy mode that shrinks photos saved as PNG far more. Transparency is kept in both.

Set the quality to 100% for lossless output, or lower it for smaller files. Safari on Mac, iPhone and iPad has opened JXL files since 2023. Chrome and Firefox only began switching JPEG XL on by default in their autumn 2026 releases, so people on older browser versions, many apps and most upload forms still cannot open them.

How to use it

  1. Choose one or more PNG files.
  2. They convert to JXL automatically. Adjust the quality if you like.
  3. Download each file, or all of them as a ZIP.

Questions

Is PNG to JXL lossless?

At 100% quality, yes: the JXL decodes to exactly the same pixels as your PNG. Below 100% it uses lossy compression, which is much smaller and still looks clean at 80% or more.

Does JXL keep the transparent background?

Yes. JPEG XL supports a full alpha channel, so transparent areas stay transparent.

Why is my JXL bigger than I expected?

Lossless mode on photos cannot shrink them much. Lower the quality to 80–90% for photos, or use PNG to AVIF.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The tool runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript, so your files never leave your device. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it keeps working.

Is it free?

Yes, free with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
