Got a .jxl file that will not open? JPEG XL is still new: safari on Mac, iPhone and iPad has opened JXL files since 2023. Chrome and Firefox only began switching JPEG XL on by default in their autumn 2026 releases, so people on older browser versions, many apps and most upload forms still cannot open them.
This converter decodes the JXL on your device, using the browser's own decoder when it has one and a built-in WebAssembly decoder when it does not, then saves it as a standard JPG. Transparent areas become white, because JPG has no transparency.
How to use it
- Choose one or more JXL files.
- They convert to JPG automatically. Adjust the quality if you like.
- Download each file, or all of them as a ZIP.
Questions
Why can't I open a JXL file?
Many apps and older browsers do not support JPEG XL yet. Converting to JPG makes the image open everywhere.
Will I lose quality?
JPG is lossy, but at the default 92% the difference is not visible. Use JXL to PNG if you need a lossless copy.
Does it work on Android and Windows?
Yes. The decoder runs inside the page, so it works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox even where the browser cannot display JXL by itself.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript, so your files never leave your device. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it keeps working.
Is it free?
Yes, free with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.
