PDF to PNG in High Quality: DPI, Mac & Transparent Background
Convert PDF pages to sharp, lossless PNG images. Which DPI to pick, how to do it on Mac, and the honest answer on transparent backgrounds.
For a high quality PDF to PNG conversion, render each page at 300 DPI as PNG. PDF to PNG draws the page fresh from the PDF at the resolution you pick and saves it losslessly, so text, lines and diagrams come out sharp with no compression blur. Choose 150 DPI if the images are only for screens, and 300 DPI for print or close zooming.
PNG is the better choice over JPG when the page is mostly text, charts, slides or line art. For pages full of photos, JPG gives similar quality at a fraction of the size.
Step by step: PDF to PNG in high quality
- Open PDF to PNG and choose your PDF. Conversion starts at the default Standard (150 DPI).
- For maximum sharpness, change Resolution to Print (300 DPI) and press Convert again.
- To convert only some pages, type them in Pages, for example
1, 4-6, and press Convert. - Download each PNG, or use Download all (.zip) for many pages.
The PDF never leaves your device. That matters for contracts, invoices and internal reports.
What DPI means for PDF to PNG
A PDF page has a physical size, such as A4 (21 x 29.7 cm), but no pixel size. DPI (dots per inch) decides how many pixels the page is turned into. More DPI means more pixels, sharper text, and bigger files.
| Resolution | A4 page becomes | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| 72 DPI | about 595 x 842 px | Thumbnails, quick previews |
| 150 DPI | about 1240 x 1754 px | Screens, presentations, websites, chats |
| 300 DPI | about 2480 x 3508 px | Printing, posters, zooming into fine print |
Rendering is vector-based for text and drawings: at 300 DPI the letters are drawn at 300 DPI, not enlarged from a smaller image. That is why a PDF to PNG at high DPI looks better than a screenshot of the PDF.
The exception is a scanned PDF. Each page there is already a photo, and rendering above the scan's own resolution adds pixels but no detail. For scans, 150 DPI is usually enough. Our guide to image size, resolution and DPI explains this in more depth.
PDF to PNG or PDF to JPG?
| PNG | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossless | Lossy |
| Text and line art | Perfectly crisp | Slight fuzz around edges |
| Photos | Very large files | Much smaller, looks the same |
| Typical use | Slides, diagrams, documents for editing | Social media, forms with KB limits |
If you need a small file for an upload, PDF to JPG followed by an image compressor is the better route. See PDF to JPG under 100 KB.
Change PDF to PNG on Mac
With Preview (built in):
- Open the PDF in Preview.
- Go to the page you want to convert.
- Choose File > Export.
- Set Format to PNG and type a Resolution (for example 300 pixels/inch).
- Save.
Preview's image export saves the page you are on, not the whole document, so for a 20-page PDF you would repeat it 20 times. The browser tool converts every page in one go and zips them.
On Windows, there is no built-in PDF to PNG export. Use the browser tool, or a desktop PDF editor if you have one.
On Linux, the poppler-utils package includes command-line converters. For example, pdftoppm -png -r 300 input.pdf page writes page-1.png, page-2.png and so on at 300 DPI.
PDF to PNG with a transparent background
People often want a transparent PNG from a PDF, typically a logo, a signature or an icon that was saved as PDF.
Our converter renders every page on a white background, so the PNG has no transparency. That keeps ordinary documents looking right, because many PDFs have no background of their own and would otherwise come out as black text on nothing.
If you need transparency:
- pdftocairo (also part of poppler-utils, available on Linux and on Mac through Homebrew) has a
-transpoption:pdftocairo -png -transp -r 300 logo.pdf logo. - Design apps such as Illustrator, Inkscape or Affinity can open a PDF and export a PNG with transparency.
- It only works if the PDF itself has no white box behind the content. Many logos exported as PDF include a white rectangle. In that case you will get white either way, and the background has to be removed in an image editor.
For a handwritten signature you photographed, it is usually easier to make the background pure white rather than transparent; most forms want a white background anyway.
Making high quality PNGs smaller
A 300 DPI PNG of a full page can be several megabytes. To reduce it without losing much:
- Use 150 DPI if the image is for a screen.
- Run it through compress PNG. It reduces the image to a palette of up to 256 colours. Text pages and diagrams usually shrink a lot with no visible change, though pages with photos may show slight banding.
- Crop away empty margins with crop image.
- Switch to JPG for photo-heavy pages.
Common mistakes
- Taking a screenshot of the PDF. It captures only your screen's resolution. Rendering at 300 DPI gives a far sharper image.
- Using 300 DPI for everything. For a slide in a chat or a web page, 150 DPI looks the same and is a quarter of the pixels.
- Expecting a transparent background from a tool that renders on white. Check the output before building it into a design.
- Upscaling a scanned PDF. If the source scan is blurry, a higher DPI will not fix it. Rescan instead.
Questions
How do I convert PDF to PNG without losing quality?
Render the page at 300 DPI as PNG. PNG is lossless, so the image keeps every sharp edge of the text and lines. Higher DPI means more pixels and a sharper result when zoomed or printed.
What DPI should I use for PDF to PNG?
150 DPI for viewing on screens, slides and web pages; 300 DPI for printing or when you need to zoom into fine detail. 72 DPI is only for small previews.
How do I change a PDF to PNG on Mac?
Open the PDF in Preview, go to the page you want, choose File > Export, set Format to PNG and pick a resolution. Or use a browser-based PDF to PNG tool to convert every page at once.
Can I convert PDF to PNG with a transparent background?
Our tool renders each page on white, so the PNG is not transparent. For transparency you need a converter with that option, such as pdftocairo with -transp on Linux or Mac, and the PDF must not draw its own white background.
