WebP to PNG: Save WebP as PNG With Transparency Kept

Convert WebP to PNG in your browser without losing quality or the transparent background. Steps for Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone.

· 4 min read

To save a WebP as PNG, open WebP to PNG, choose your .webp file and download the PNG. The conversion is lossless and keeps any transparent background, which is the main reason to pick PNG over JPG. It works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on any device, handles several files at once, and runs locally, so nothing is uploaded.

Why convert WebP to PNG (and not JPG)?

Both PNG and JPG open everywhere, so either fixes "this app will not open WebP". The difference is what they keep:

WebP to PNG WebP to JPG
Transparency Kept Filled with white
Quality Lossless, exact pixels Lossy, but invisible at 90%+
File size Large Small
Best for Logos, stickers, icons, graphics, editing Photos, forms, sharing

Choose PNG when the image has a transparent background, contains text or sharp lines, or will be edited further. Choose WebP to JPG for photos, especially when you need a small file for a form. Our WebP to JPG guide covers that route.

How to save WebP as PNG: step by step

  1. Open WebP to PNG.
  2. Choose or drag in one or more WebP files.
  3. They convert automatically. Download each PNG, or all of them as a ZIP.

There is no quality slider because PNG is lossless. The page also has a Convert to menu if you change your mind and want JPG, WebP, AVIF or JPEG XL instead.

On Windows

Use the browser converter above, or open the WebP in Paint and choose File > Save as > PNG picture. Check the result if your image was transparent: depending on the version, Paint may not keep transparency, while the browser converter does.

On Mac

Open the WebP in Preview, choose File > Export, set Format to PNG and save. Preview keeps transparency in PNG exports.

On Android and iPhone

Open the converter in Chrome or Safari, pick the WebP from your gallery or Files app, and download. On Android the PNG goes to Downloads; on iPhone it goes to the Files app, from where you can save it to Photos.

WebP to PNG with transparency

WebP supports an alpha channel, just like PNG, so a sticker or logo cut-out saved as WebP has real see-through areas. When you convert to PNG, that alpha channel is carried across exactly, including soft, semi-transparent edges like shadows and anti-aliased outlines.

To check it worked, open the PNG in an app that shows transparency, such as an image editor that displays a checkerboard behind transparent pixels, or place it on a coloured background in a document or slide.

If the image comes out with a white background, the WebP itself probably was not transparent. Many web images look transparent because they sit on a white page, but the white is part of the picture.

WebP to PNG in high quality

The PNG will match the WebP exactly, pixel for pixel. Two things to know:

  • It will not be sharper than the WebP. If the website served a small or heavily compressed version, the PNG keeps those flaws. Try to save the largest version of the image you can find, for example by opening it in its own tab first.
  • It keeps the same dimensions. The PNG has the same width and height as the WebP. To change size, use resize image after converting.

When the PNG is too big

Lossless PNG files are large, often several times the size of the WebP. If that is a problem:

  • For graphics and logos, compress PNG reduces the colour palette and keeps transparency. Flat graphics often shrink a lot.
  • For photos, PNG is the wrong container. Convert to JPG instead.
  • For your own website, there is no need to convert to PNG at all. WebP already keeps transparency at a fraction of the size. If you have a PNG that you want to publish, go the other way with PNG to WebP.

Editing WebP files in older apps

Some desktop editors and office software still cannot open WebP, or open it without transparency. Converting to PNG gives you a file every editor understands. A good workflow:

  1. Convert WebP to PNG.
  2. Edit the PNG and save it as PNG while you work, so you do not lose quality on each save.
  3. When finished, export to the format the destination needs: PNG for documents, JPG for forms, WebP for the web.

Animated WebP

An animated WebP contains several frames. PNG output from our converter is a single still image, so only one frame is kept. For animations, keep the WebP or use a dedicated GIF or video tool.

Common mistakes

  • Renaming instead of converting. Changing .webp to .png leaves the data as WebP. Some apps will open it anyway, others will reject it, and forms that check content will fail.
  • Choosing JPG for a transparent logo. The background turns white. Use PNG.
  • Converting a small preview. Right-click menus often grab a thumbnail. Open the full image first.
  • Assuming PNG is "better" for photos. It is lossless, but photo PNGs are huge. For photos, JPG at high quality looks the same and is far smaller.
  • Batch-converting images you do not need. PNG copies take up space quickly. Convert only what you will use.

WebP to PNG is the right choice whenever transparency or exact pixels matter. Convert, check the background, and compress if the file is too heavy.

Questions

Does WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. PNG supports full transparency, so transparent and semi-transparent areas of the WebP stay transparent in the PNG.

Is WebP to PNG lossless?

The conversion is lossless: the PNG stores exactly the pixels decoded from the WebP. If the WebP was saved with lossy compression, that earlier loss remains, but nothing more is lost.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the WebP?

WebP compresses images much more tightly than PNG. A PNG of the same picture is often several times larger. Use compress PNG if the size is a problem, or JPG if you do not need transparency.

How do I save a WebP image as PNG from a website?

Save the image as usual, which gives you a .webp file, then convert it with a WebP to PNG converter. Renaming the file to .png does not convert it.
