How to Convert WebP to JPG on Windows, Mac and Phone

Saved an image and got a .webp file? Here is why it happens, how to open WebP, and how to convert WebP to JPG on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone.

· 5 min read

To convert WebP to JPG, open WebP to JPG, choose your .webp files and download the JPGs. It works in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone, converts many files at once, and runs on your device, so nothing is uploaded. On a computer you can also do it with built-in apps: Paint on Windows or Preview on Mac.

Below: why your images keep saving as WebP, how to open them, and step-by-step conversion on each device.

Why images save as WebP

WebP is an image format made by Google for the web. Its files are usually noticeably smaller than JPGs of similar quality, so websites and image CDNs often send WebP to any browser that says it can display it. Your browser shows the picture normally, but when you right-click and choose Save image as, you get the file it actually received: a .webp.

The site may still have a JPG version on its server, but you usually cannot choose which one you are sent. Converting after you download is the reliable fix.

How to open a WebP file

Most current software opens WebP:

  • Any modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari) displays WebP. Dragging the file into a browser tab is the quickest way to view it.
  • Windows 11 opens WebP in Photos and Paint on current versions.
  • Mac opens WebP in Preview on recent macOS versions.
  • Android and iPhone galleries display WebP on current versions.

The problems come with older software, some editing apps, printing services and especially upload forms. Most exam, job and government portals accept only JPG/JPEG, sometimes PNG. That is when you need to convert.

How to convert WebP to JPG on Windows

With the browser converter (best for many files)

  1. Open WebP to JPG in Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
  2. Choose or drag in your WebP files. Select several at once if you like.
  3. Download each JPG, or all of them as a ZIP.

With Paint

  1. Right-click the WebP file and choose Open with > Paint.
  2. Choose File > Save as > JPEG picture.
  3. Pick a folder and save.

Paint is fine for a single file but has no quality setting and no batch mode.

How to convert WebP to JPG on Mac

With Preview

  1. Open the WebP in Preview.
  2. Choose File > Export.
  3. Set Format to JPEG, adjust Quality if you like, and save.

For several files, open them together, select them all in Preview's sidebar and choose File > Export Selected Images, or use the browser converter and download a ZIP.

How to convert WebP to JPG on Android

  1. Open WebP to JPG in Chrome.
  2. Tap Choose images and pick the WebP from Files or Downloads.
  3. Download the JPG. It saves to your Downloads folder and appears in your gallery.

On iPhone

Open the converter in Safari, pick the file from Photos or the Files app, and download. The JPG saves to Files (Downloads), where you can share it or save it to Photos.

WebP to JPG without losing quality

JPG is lossy, so converting does re-compress the image. At high quality the change is invisible:

  • Our converter starts at 92% quality, which looks the same as the original on screen.
  • Raise the slider to 100% for the most faithful JPG, at the cost of a bigger file.
  • If you need a truly lossless copy, convert WebP to PNG instead. PNG keeps every pixel but is larger.

Remember the WebP itself may already be compressed. Converting cannot add detail that the website removed.

What happens to transparency?

WebP can have a transparent background; JPG cannot. When you convert a transparent WebP to JPG, the transparent areas are filled with white. If you need to keep the transparency, for a logo or a sticker, choose WebP to PNG instead. Our guide on saving WebP as PNG covers that case.

Animated WebP

WebP can also be animated, like a GIF. JPG cannot animate, so the converter saves a single still frame. If you need the animation, keep the WebP or use a dedicated video or GIF tool.

Making the JPG smaller for a form

Converted JPGs at 92% quality can be larger than the WebP they came from. That is normal: WebP compresses better. If a form has a size limit:

  1. Convert the WebP to JPG.
  2. Shrink it with compress JPEG, using quality mode or a target size.
  3. Or go straight to a target-size tool such as compress image to 100 KB, which accepts WebP and lets you pick JPG as the output.

For exam photos that need exact pixel dimensions as well, use the exam photo resizer, which outputs JPG directly from a WebP.

WebP vs JPG: should you avoid WebP?

Not at all. For websites, WebP is usually the better format because it is smaller. It is just less universally accepted outside browsers. A good rule:

  • Viewing or using on the web: keep WebP.
  • Uploading to forms, printing, sending to older software: convert to JPG.
  • Editing with transparency: convert to PNG.

Our JPG vs PNG vs WebP guide explains the trade-offs in more detail.

Common mistakes

  • Renaming the extension. photo.webp renamed to photo.jpg is still WebP inside.
  • Taking a screenshot instead of converting. It works in a pinch but lowers resolution and adds screen borders. Converting keeps the full image.
  • Converting a thumbnail. On many sites the image you right-click is a small preview. Open the full-size image first, then save it.
  • Expecting the JPG to be smaller. It is usually larger. Compress afterwards if size matters.
  • Uploading WebP to a portal that says "JPG only". It will often fail silently or be rejected later. Convert first and check the file ends in .jpg or .jpeg.

WebP is a good web format that occasionally gets in the way. A ten-second conversion fixes it on any device.

Questions

Why do images save as WebP instead of JPG?

Many websites send WebP to browsers that support it, because WebP files are smaller and pages load faster. When you right-click and save, you get the file the site actually sent, which is WebP.

How do I convert WebP to JPG without losing quality?

Use a high JPG quality, around 90% or above. Our converter defaults to 92%, which looks the same as the WebP on screen. For a lossless copy, convert WebP to PNG instead.

Can I convert many WebP files to JPG at once?

Yes. Select all the WebP files together in the WebP to JPG converter and download the JPGs as a single ZIP.

Can I just rename .webp to .jpg?

No. Renaming changes the label, not the data. The file is still WebP inside, and apps or upload forms that check the content will reject it.
