How to Convert JPG to PNG with a Transparent Background

Converting JPG to PNG does not remove the background by itself. Here is how to get a real transparent PNG on iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows.

· 6 min read

To convert JPG to PNG, open JPG to PNG, choose your file and download the PNG. But a plain conversion does not make the background transparent. JPG has no transparency, so the PNG you get has exactly the same white or coloured background. For a transparent PNG you need one extra step: removing the background, which you can do with built-in tools on iPhone, Mac and Windows, or with a dedicated background remover.

This guide covers both parts: the conversion itself on every device, and how to get the transparent background most people are actually after.

Does PNG make the background transparent?

No. PNG supports transparency, which means each pixel can be fully or partly see-through. A JPG does not, so every pixel in a JPG is solid. When you convert JPG to PNG, the solid pixels stay solid. The format changes, the picture does not.

Think of PNG as a container that can hold transparency, not a tool that creates it. Something has to decide which pixels are "background" and erase them. That is background removal, and it is a separate job.

How to convert JPG to PNG (any device)

The quickest method that works on phone and laptop alike:

  1. Open JPG to PNG in Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox.
  2. Choose one or more JPG files. You can select several at once.
  3. They convert straight away. Download each PNG, or all of them as a ZIP.

The conversion happens in your browser, so the photos are not uploaded to a server. PNG output is lossless, so there is no quality slider: the PNG holds the decoded JPG pixel for pixel.

How to convert JPG to PNG on iPhone

iPhone has no "Save as PNG" option in Photos. Two ways that work:

  • In Safari: open the JPG to PNG page, tap Choose images, pick the photo from your library or Files, then download the result. It saves to the Files app (Downloads folder by default), from where you can share it or save it to Photos.
  • With the Shortcuts app: Apple's Shortcuts app has a Convert Image action that can output PNG. You can build a small shortcut that takes a photo and converts it, which is handy if you do this often.

How to convert JPG to PNG on Android

Open the converter in Chrome, tap Choose images, pick the photo from your gallery or Files, and download. The PNG lands in your Downloads folder. Most gallery apps do not offer a PNG export, so the browser is usually the simplest route.

How to convert JPG to PNG on Mac

Open the JPG in Preview, choose File > Export, set Format to PNG and save. Recent macOS versions can also convert from Finder: right-click the file and look under Quick Actions > Convert Image.

How to convert JPG to PNG on Windows

Open the JPG in Paint, choose File > Save as > PNG picture, and save. For many files at once, the browser converter is quicker, because you can select them all and download a single ZIP.

How to get a transparent background

Once you know conversion alone will not do it, the job becomes: remove the background, save as PNG. Our tools do not remove backgrounds, so here are the honest options.

Built into your device

  • iPhone and iPad (recent iOS): in Photos, touch and hold the main subject of a photo until it lifts away from the background, then choose Copy or Share. The lifted subject has a transparent background. Paste it into an app that accepts images, or share it to Files.
  • Mac: in Preview, show the Markup toolbar and use Instant Alpha: click and drag over the background colour to select it, then press Delete. Export as PNG. This works best on plain, evenly coloured backgrounds.
  • Windows 11: recent versions of Paint include a Remove background button. After it runs, save the result as a PNG to keep the transparency.

Dedicated background removers

Canva, Photoshop and specialist sites like remove.bg all have automatic background removal. Check the terms before using them for personal documents: some features are paid, and web services usually upload your image to their servers.

For signatures and logos on white paper

If you scanned a signature or a logo on white paper, you often do not need transparency at all. Many forms want a JPG on a white background anyway. If you do need a transparent version, Instant Alpha on Mac or a background remover handles flat white backgrounds well. Raise the contrast first with black and white so the edges are crisp; our guide to making a signature clear for online forms explains how.

JPG to PNG in high quality

Converting to PNG is lossless, so the PNG is as good as the JPG it came from, but no better. Some people convert to PNG hoping to "upgrade" a blurry or blocky JPG. That does not work: the blur and the compression blocks are now part of the pixels, and PNG keeps them faithfully.

What PNG does give you:

  • No further loss when you edit and save repeatedly. Every time you re-save a JPG it loses a little more; a PNG does not.
  • Clean edges for text, line art and graphics you add on top.
  • Transparency, once you remove the background.

If you need the best quality, start from the original photo, not a copy saved from WhatsApp or a social site, which will already be compressed.

Keeping the PNG small

A photo saved as PNG can easily be five to ten times the size of the JPG. That matters if a form or website has a size limit. Options:

  • Compress the PNG: compress PNG reduces the number of colours and keeps transparency. Logos, cut-outs and graphics usually shrink a lot; full photos less so.
  • Go back to JPG if you do not need transparency: PNG to JPG turns transparent areas white and shrinks photos dramatically.
  • Use WebP for a website: it keeps transparency and is usually much smaller than PNG. See our JPG vs PNG vs WebP guide.

When should you use PNG instead of JPG?

Use PNG for Use JPG for
Logos and icons with transparent backgrounds Camera photos
Screenshots with text Exam and job form photos
Images you will edit many times Images you email or print
Product cut-outs and stickers Anything with a strict KB limit

Common mistakes

  • Expecting transparency from conversion alone. The background stays until you remove it.
  • Renaming .jpg to .png. This does not convert anything. The file is still a JPG inside, and some apps will refuse it.
  • Uploading a transparent PNG where a JPG is required. Exam and government portals usually want JPG/JPEG. Transparent areas can show up black on some systems, so convert to JPG (which fills them with white) before uploading.
  • Using a checkerboard image as "transparent". Some image search results show a grey-and-white checkerboard that is actually painted into the picture. If the checkerboard is still there after you download, the image was never transparent.
  • Huge PNGs from photos. If the file is too big to upload, compress it or switch back to JPG.

In short: convert with a click, but remove the background separately. Do the removal with a built-in tool or a background remover, save as PNG, and compress it if the file is too large.

Questions

Does converting JPG to PNG make the background transparent?

No. A JPG has no transparency, so the converted PNG keeps the same white or coloured background. You need a background removal step, either before or after converting, to get transparent areas.

How do I convert JPG to PNG without losing quality?

PNG is lossless, so converting a JPG to PNG keeps every pixel of the JPG exactly. It cannot restore detail the JPG already lost, but nothing more is lost during the conversion.

Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?

PNG stores pixels without lossy compression, and photos have millions of slightly different colours, so a photo PNG is often several times the size of the JPG. Use compress PNG to shrink it, or keep the photo as JPG if you do not need PNG.

How do I convert JPG to PNG on my phone without an app?

Open a browser-based JPG to PNG converter in Chrome or Safari, choose the photo and download the PNG. The conversion runs on the phone, so nothing is installed or uploaded.
