PNG to JPG Under 100 KB (or 50 KB, 200 KB) in High Quality
Convert a PNG to a JPG under 100 KB in one step, keep it sharp, and hit 50 KB or 200 KB limits too. Works on iPhone, Android and PC.
To convert a PNG to a JPG under 100 KB, open compress image to 100 KB, choose the PNG and set Output format to JPG. The tool converts it and searches for the highest JPG quality that fits under 100 KB, only shrinking the dimensions if quality alone is not enough. If you just need a JPG with no size limit, use PNG to JPG instead.
The same method works for 50 KB, 200 KB or any other limit. Below are the exact steps, what to do on a phone, and how to keep the result looking sharp.
Why PNG to JPG shrinks the file so much
PNG is lossless. It is excellent for screenshots and logos, but a photo saved as PNG keeps every tiny colour variation, so a phone photo can be several megabytes. JPG throws away detail the eye barely notices, which is why the same photo as a JPG is often a tenth of the size.
That makes converting to JPG the single biggest step towards a small file. For a form with a 100 KB limit, conversion plus a quality search usually gets there without visible damage.
PNG to JPG 100 KB: step by step
- Open compress image to 100 KB.
- Choose your PNG.
- Set Output format to JPG. (Left on "Same as original", a PNG stays a PNG, which compresses far less.)
- The tool compresses straight away and shows the new size. Download it.
If the note says the image was scaled down, the original was too detailed to fit at full size. That is normal for big photos and usually invisible at form-upload sizes.
You can also use compress JPEG: it accepts PNG files, always outputs JPG, and lets you switch between a quality slider and a target size in KB or MB.
PNG to JPG 50 KB, 200 KB or 20 KB
Change the target to match your form:
- 50 KB: use compress image to 50 KB and set Output format to JPG. Common for exam photos.
- 200 KB: use compress image to 200 KB. At this size most photos keep full resolution at high quality.
- 20 KB or less: use compress image to 20 KB. Expect the image to be scaled down; at 20 KB there is not much room. Our guide to reducing a photo to 20 KB or 50 KB has more tips.
If the form also demands exact pixel dimensions (say 200 × 230 px) and a minimum size, a plain compressor is not enough. The exam photo resizer sets pixels and a KB range together and outputs JPG.
How to change PNG to JPG on iPhone
iPhone screenshots are saved as PNG, which is why many people hit this problem. To convert:
- Open PNG to JPG (or a target-size tool) in Safari.
- Tap Choose images and pick the screenshot from your library or the Files app.
- Download the JPG. It saves to Files, in Downloads by default.
From Files you can share the JPG to an app, attach it to an email, or save it to Photos. The conversion runs inside Safari, so nothing is uploaded.
On Android
Open the tool in Chrome, choose the PNG from your gallery or Files, and download. The JPG appears in your Downloads folder.
On Windows and Mac
The browser tool works the same way on a laptop and handles many files at once, downloading them as a ZIP. Without a browser:
- Windows: open the PNG in Paint and choose File > Save as > JPEG picture. Paint does not let you choose a target size, so you may need to compress afterwards.
- Mac: open the PNG in Preview, choose File > Export, set Format to JPEG and drag the Quality slider. Preview shows the estimated file size as you drag.
PNG to JPG in high quality
For photos, a JPG at 90% quality looks the same as the PNG on screen. The default in our PNG to JPG converter is 92%, and you can raise it to 100% if you want.
Where quality loss shows up:
- Screenshots and text. JPG adds faint halos around sharp edges, especially at low quality. If a screenshot must stay crisp, keep the quality high or keep it as PNG.
- Flat colours and diagrams. Large areas of one colour can pick up faint blotches at low quality.
- Very small targets. Squeezing a large photo into 20 KB will cost detail no matter what tool you use.
Two tricks for a sharper small JPG:
- Crop first. Cutting away empty background with crop image leaves more of the KB budget for the part that matters.
- Resize to the size you need. A 4000 px wide photo squeezed to 100 KB looks worse than a 1200 px version at the same size, because the compressor has fewer pixels to spend bits on. Resize image first if the form does not need full resolution.
What happens to transparency?
JPG has no transparency. When you convert a PNG with a transparent background, the transparent parts must become a solid colour. Our tools fill them with white, which suits signatures, logos and most forms. If you need to keep transparency, stay with PNG and use compress PNG instead, or consider WebP for websites.
PNG to JPG without changing size or resolution
Converting does not change the pixel dimensions. A 1080 × 1920 PNG becomes a 1080 × 1920 JPG. The only time dimensions change is when you set a target KB that cannot be reached at full size; the result note tells you if that happened.
If you want a smaller file but the same pixels, use quality mode in compress JPEG and lower the quality until the size is acceptable. The dimensions will stay fixed.
Common mistakes
- Leaving Output format on "Same as original". A PNG stays PNG, and you get a much weaker result. Pick JPG.
- Renaming
.pngto.jpg. The file is still PNG inside. Some portals check the actual content and will reject it. - Converting a JPG that was already compressed many times. Each round loses more detail. Start from the original.
- Ignoring the minimum size. Some exam forms reject files that are too small, for example under 10 KB. Use the exam photo resizer, which can pad a file up to a minimum without changing the pixels.
- Uploading without checking the extension. Make sure the downloaded file ends in
.jpgor.jpeg.
PNG to JPG is usually the fastest route to a small, form-friendly file. Set the format, set the target, and download.
Questions
How do I convert PNG to JPG in 100 KB?
Open the compress image to 100 KB tool, choose your PNG and set Output format to JPG. It finds the highest JPG quality that fits under 100 KB and only scales the image down if it has to.
How do I change a PNG to JPG on iPhone?
Open a PNG to JPG converter in Safari, choose the image from Photos or Files, and download the JPG. It saves to Files, and you can share it or save it to Photos from there.
Does converting PNG to JPG reduce quality?
Slightly, because JPG is lossy, but at around 90% quality the change is not visible on photos. Text and sharp lines can show faint halos at low quality, so keep the quality high for screenshots.
Why did my transparent PNG turn white when converted to JPG?
JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas must be filled with a colour. Our converters fill them with white, which is what most forms expect.
