How to Compress a PDF in Mobile (Android & iPhone, No App)

Compress a PDF on your Android phone or iPhone without installing an app. Works for scanned PDFs and exact KB limits like 200 KB, free and private.

· 4 min read

To compress a PDF in mobile, open our compress PDF tool in your phone's browser (Chrome on Android, Safari on iPhone), tap to choose the PDF, and download the smaller copy. You do not need to install an app or create an account, and the file is processed on your phone rather than uploaded to a server.

If a form gives you an exact limit, use a target-size page instead, such as compress PDF to 200 KB. It fits the file under the limit at the best quality it can.

Compress a PDF on Android

  1. Find the PDF. Files from email or WhatsApp are easiest to pick if you save them to Downloads first.
  2. Open Chrome and go to compress PDF or the target size you need, such as 100 KB, 200 KB or 500 KB.
  3. Tap "Choose a PDF". Android opens its file picker. Go to Downloads (or Files) and tap your PDF.
  4. Wait for it to finish. You will see the old and new sizes.
  5. Tap Download. The compressed copy goes to your Downloads folder with -compressed in the name.

Samsung Internet, Firefox and Edge work the same way.

Compress a PDF in iPhone

  1. Save the PDF to the Files app if it is in Mail, WhatsApp or Messages. Tap the file, tap the share icon, then Save to Files.
  2. Open Safari and go to the compressor page.
  3. Tap "Choose a PDF", then Browse to pick the file from Files.
  4. Tap Download when it is ready. By default Safari saves downloads to Files, in the Downloads folder (you can check under Settings, Safari, Downloads).
  5. Upload from Files. When the portal asks for the document, choose Browse and pick the compressed copy.

Chrome on iPhone also works. Its downloads can open in a preview first; use the share option to save the file to Files.

Compress a PDF without an app: why the browser is enough

Many people install a PDF app just to compress one document. That is not necessary. Modern phone browsers can open a PDF, render each page, and rebuild it smaller entirely on the device. That is how our tools work.

Benefits over a typical app:

  • No install, no storage used, no sign-up.
  • Privacy. Your marksheet or ID is not sent to anyone's server. Our guide on whether online PDF tools are safe explains how to check this for any site.
  • No watermark on the result.

Apps such as Adobe Acrobat, iLovePDF and others also offer compression on mobile and are fine choices if you already use them. Check whether a given app processes files on your phone or uploads them, especially for identity documents.

Scanned PDF on phone: compress it the right way

Most large PDFs on phones are scans. A phone camera captures pages at very high resolution, so a 3-page scan can easily be 5–10 MB.

For the smallest clear result:

  • Scan with a document scanner, not the camera app. On iPhone, Notes and Files have Scan Documents; on Android, Google Drive has a Scan button. Our phone scanning guide walks through both.
  • Tick Black & white in the compressor for text documents. It makes files much smaller and text often looks sharper.
  • Remove pages the portal does not need using delete PDF pages before compressing.

If you have photos of the pages rather than a PDF, combine them first with image to PDF. It accepts JPG, PNG, WebP and iPhone HEIC photos. Choose "Smaller file" image quality to keep the PDF small from the start, then compress if you still need to hit a limit.

Picking the right target on a phone

What the form says Which page to use
"Max 100 KB" compress PDF to 100 KB
"Max 200 KB" compress PDF to 200 KB
"Max 500 KB" or "1 MB" the 500 KB or 1 MB pages
Any other number compress PDF, choose Target size, type the number
"Make it smaller", no limit compress PDF on Recommended

Leave a little margin under the limit. Our tool counts 1 KB as 1024 bytes and some portals count 1000, so a target of 190 KB is safer for a 200 KB rule.

If it is slow or stuck

Phones have less memory than laptops. With a long PDF (say 40+ pages):

  • Close other apps and browser tabs.
  • Keep the screen on while it works; some phones pause background tabs.
  • Split the document first with split PDF and compress each part.

What changes after compression

The compressor rebuilds pages as images. On a scanned document you will not notice any difference except the size. On a typed PDF, text will no longer be selectable. Digitally signed PDFs lose their digital signature validation, so upload those as issued.

Common mistakes

  • Uploading from Gallery or Recents and picking the original. Choose from Downloads or Files, and look for -compressed in the name.
  • Compressing twice. Start from the original each time, or the text blurs.
  • Uploading on a weak signal. Compression happens on your phone, but the portal upload still needs a stable connection. Move somewhere with better signal or switch to Wi-Fi before you submit.
  • Not opening the result. Tap it once and zoom in on small text before you submit.
