Compress Image to 30 KB in JPG (Also 40 KB and 30 KB PDF)
Get a photo or signature under 30 KB or 40 KB as a JPG on phone or PC, keep it sharp, and make a 30 KB PDF when a form asks for one.
To compress an image to 30 KB, resize it to the dimensions you actually need, then save it as a JPG at the highest quality that fits under 30 KB. The compress image to 30 KB tool does this automatically: choose the photo, and it finds the best JPG quality under the limit and only shrinks the pixel size if it must. It runs in your browser on phone or PC, and the file is never uploaded.
30 KB comes up a lot on Indian forms: online PAN photo and signature uploads are commonly under 30 KB, and NTA forms such as NEET have used a 4–30 KB signature limit. It is a comfortable size for a passport-style photo, so the result can look sharp if you prepare it properly.
Compress photo to 30 KB JPG: step by step
- Crop to what matters. For a photo, keep the face and shoulders; for a signature, crop closely around the ink. Use crop image if needed.
- Resize to the form's pixel size. If the notice gives a size, use resize image and type the width and height in pixels, or in cm with the DPI the notice states. If it gives no pixel size, around 300–400 pixels on the longest side is plenty for a passport-style photo.
- Compress to 30 KB. Choose the resized file on compress image to 30 KB. The size before and after is shown next to the result.
- Download and check. The new file ends in
-compressed.jpg. Open it, zoom in, and confirm the face or signature is clear.
You can also do steps 2 and 3 in one go: the resize tool has an optional Max size (KB) box. Type 30 there and it resizes and compresses together.
Reduce image to 30 KB on a phone
No app is needed. Open the tool in Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone, tap Choose images, pick the photo, and tap Download. Android saves to the Downloads folder; Safari on iPhone saves to Downloads in the Files app.
iPhone photos are often HEIC. The tool opens HEIC and saves a JPG, which is what most portals require. If you need the full-size converted photo for something else, use HEIC to JPG.
What a 30 KB photo can hold
| Image | Typical pixel size | 30 KB result |
|---|---|---|
| Signature | 140 x 60 to 400 x 200 | Very sharp |
| PAN-style photo | 213 x 213 | Very sharp |
| Bank exam photo | 200 x 230 | Very sharp |
| NTA / UPSC style photo | 350 x 450 | Good |
| Full phone photo | 3000 x 4000 | Must be scaled down a lot |
The pixel sizes above are common examples, not official rules for your exam. Check your notification.
The lesson from the table: 30 KB is generous for small images and very tight for big ones. If a 30 KB result looks soft, the fix is almost always to resize first, not to fight the compressor.
Compress image to 40 KB (or any other number)
The 30 KB page is just a preset. Every compress tool on the site has a Compress by menu. Choose Target size, type the number you need (40, 35, 25, anything) and keep the unit on KB. The tool then aims for the best quality under that number.
If your form gives a range, for example 20–50 KB, aim for the middle. Compress image to 50 KB gives you a file just under 50 KB, but for a range like that, a target of 40 KB leaves safe headroom.
If the form has a minimum (say "between 20 KB and 30 KB"), the plain compressor cannot guarantee you will not go below it. Use the exam photo resizer instead: choose Custom, type the pixel size and the minimum and maximum KB, and it keeps the file in range, padding it with harmless extra data if it comes out too small.
30 KB PDF: when the form wants a PDF, not a JPG
Some portals ask for a document as a PDF under 30 KB. That is very small for a PDF, so it is only realistic for a single page, such as a signature, a small certificate or one ID card side.
- Shrink the image first. Compress the scan or photo to around 25 KB with the target-size option.
- Make the PDF. Open image to PDF, add the image, set Page size to Same as image and Margin to None, and choose Smaller file under image quality.
- Compress if needed. If the PDF is still above 30 KB, open compress PDF, choose Target size and type 30. It rebuilds the page as an image, so the text will no longer be selectable, which is fine for a scan.
A multi-page PDF under 30 KB usually means each page has to be tiny and hard to read. If the form allows 100 KB or more, use that. Our guide on compressing a PDF under 200 KB has more on PDFs for portals.
Signatures and 30 KB
A signature at 30 KB is easy, which makes it tempting to upload a sloppy one. Portals still reject faint or tiny signatures. Sign with a dark pen, photograph it in good light, crop tightly, and use the black & white option in the exam photo resizer so the paper turns clean white. That keeps the file small and the ink crisp.
Common mistakes
- Uploading the HEIC or PNG original. Check the file ends in .jpg or .jpeg.
- Compressing without resizing. The tool will shrink the picture to fit, but you get better framing if you crop and resize yourself.
- Hitting the exact limit. A file of 30.0 KB can fail a "below 30 KB" rule if the portal counts KB differently. A target of 28 KB is safer.
- Ignoring the minimum. Some forms reject files that are too small. Read the full line in the notice.
- Re-compressing repeatedly. Each JPG save loses a little more. Go back to the original if you need to try again.

Questions
How do I compress a photo to 30 KB in JPG format?
Open the compress image to 30 KB tool, choose your photo and download the result. It saves photos as JPG by default and picks the highest quality that stays under 30 KB.
How do I compress an image to 40 KB?
Use any of the compress tools, switch Compress by to Target size and type 40 in the Max file size box. The tool aims for the best quality under 40 KB.
How can I make a 30 KB PDF from a photo?
Compress the photo first, turn it into a PDF with image to PDF using the Same as image page size, then use compress PDF with a 30 KB target if it is still too big. This only works well for one page.

At small dimensions, yes in practice. A passport photo or signature at a few hundred pixels fits in 30 KB at high JPG quality. A full-size phone photo cannot, so resize it first.
