YouTube Thumbnail Size & Ratio: 1280x720, Shorts, MB Limit
YouTube thumbnail size ratio is 16:9. Use 1280x720 or larger, JPG or PNG, under the 2 MB mobile limit. Plus Shorts thumbnails and how to change one.
The YouTube thumbnail size ratio is 16:9. The long-standing standard size is 1280 x 720 pixels, saved as JPG or PNG and kept under 2 MB so it uploads from both phone and computer. YouTube's help page now recommends up to 3840 x 2160 and requires at least 640 pixels wide. Shorts use a vertical 9:16 thumbnail. Our YouTube thumbnail size tool resizes any image to 1280 x 720 and keeps it under 2 MB in one step.

YouTube changes these numbers from time to time, so check the help page if an upload is refused.
Why 1280 x 720 is still a good thumbnail size
Most viewers see thumbnails small: in a search list, on the home feed or on a TV row. A 1280 x 720 image is sharp at all those sizes, comfortably above the 640 pixel minimum, and almost always well under 2 MB as a JPG. That means you can upload it from the YouTube Studio app on your phone without hitting the mobile limit. Larger sizes such as 1920 x 1080 or 3840 x 2160 can look a bit crisper on big screens but make files much heavier.
To use a larger size with our tool, just change the width and height (for example 1920 x 1080). It keeps the 16:9 shape as long as both numbers are in that ratio.
How to make a YouTube thumbnail at 1280 x 720
- Design or pick your image. A frame from the video, a photo or a design from any editor.
- Frame it. If the important part is off-centre, use crop image with the 16:9 ratio to choose exactly what to keep.
- Resize. Open YouTube thumbnail size and choose the image. It crops from the centre to 16:9, resizes to 1280 x 720, and compresses under about 2 MB.
- Download the JPG or PNG.
- Upload it in YouTube Studio (see below).
If your thumbnail is already 16:9 but too heavy, compress image to 1 MB brings it well under the limit without changing the dimensions in most cases.
Thumbnail without black bars
Black bars appear when a 4:3 or square image is placed into the 16:9 slot. The tool's default "Crop to fill" setting avoids this by trimming the image to 16:9. If you choose "Fit inside" instead, the padding is white, not black, but it still leaves bars, so crop to fill is usually better.
YouTube Shorts thumbnail size
Shorts thumbnails are vertical, 9:16, with a minimum of 640 pixels tall. YouTube's help page says custom Shorts thumbnails can currently only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer. To make one, open YouTube thumbnail size and change the size to 1080 x 1920 (or 2160 x 3840 for the maximum recommended size).
Also note: when a vertical video has a 16:9 thumbnail, YouTube may generate a 4:5 version for the home and subscriptions pages. Keep faces and text in the middle so they survive any crop.
How to change a YouTube thumbnail
On a computer, per YouTube's help page:
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Choose Content in the left menu (and the Shorts tab for a Short).
- Click the video's title or thumbnail to open its details.
- Under Thumbnail, choose Upload file (or pick a suggested frame).
- Select your image and click Save.
You can also change thumbnails in the YouTube Studio app on a phone for regular videos, where the 2 MB limit applies. If the Upload option is missing, check that your channel is verified at youtube.com/verify. Verified channels still have a daily upload limit for thumbnails that varies by region and channel history; if you hit it, wait 24 hours.
YouTube thumbnail size in Canva or Photoshop
If you design thumbnails in an editor, start with the right canvas so you do not have to crop later:
- Canva: create a design with custom size 1280 x 720 px (Canva also has a ready-made YouTube Thumbnail template at that size).
- Photoshop or GIMP: create a new document 1280 x 720 pixels. Resolution in DPI does not matter for screens; only the pixel size counts.
- Phone editors: pick a 16:9 canvas, then run the export through our resize tool to make sure it is exactly 1280 x 720 and under 2 MB.
Export as JPG for photo-heavy designs (smaller files) or PNG for flat graphics with sharp text.
Tips for thumbnails that get clicked
- Big, readable text, three to five words at most. It has to read at phone-feed size.
- One clear subject, often a face, against a contrasting background.
- Avoid the bottom-right corner for anything important; the video length badge sits there.
- Stay consistent with colours and fonts across your channel so viewers recognise it.
- Keep it honest. A thumbnail that misrepresents the video can break YouTube's policies and annoys viewers.

Common mistakes
- Wrong ratio (4:3 or square), which gives bars or awkward crops.
- Files over 2 MB when uploading from the phone app.
- Tiny text that looks fine on a laptop and unreadable on a phone.
- Using WebP or HEIC. Convert with WebP to JPG or HEIC to JPG first.
- Unverified account, so the custom thumbnail option never appears.
Questions
What is the YouTube thumbnail size ratio?
16:9 for regular videos, for example 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 pixels. Shorts thumbnails use a vertical 9:16 ratio.
What is the maximum file size for a YouTube thumbnail?
YouTube's help page currently lists 2 MB when uploading from a mobile device and 50 MB from a computer. Keeping thumbnails under 2 MB means they upload from anywhere.
Is 1280 x 720 still the right YouTube thumbnail size?
Yes, it is a safe 16:9 size that looks sharp and stays small. YouTube's help page now recommends up to 3840 x 2160 and requires at least 640 pixels wide, so larger 16:9 images also work.
Why can't I upload a custom thumbnail on YouTube?
Custom thumbnails need a verified account, which you can do at youtube.com/verify. Verified channels also have a daily thumbnail upload limit, and Community Guidelines strikes can reduce it.
