WhatsApp DP Full Photo Without Crop: Fit Any Photo in a Square
Set a full photo as your WhatsApp DP without cropping: fit it inside a square with white borders, then upload. Also DP size and how to change it.
To set a WhatsApp DP full photo without crop, first fit the whole photo inside a square with white borders, then set that square as your profile photo. WhatsApp only takes square profile pictures, so when your photo is already square it has nothing to cut. Our WhatsApp DP size tool does this in your browser in a couple of seconds, without uploading your photo anywhere.
Why WhatsApp crops your DP
WhatsApp profile photos are square, and the app shows them as a circle. When you choose a normal phone photo, which is tall (3:4 or 9:16) or wide, WhatsApp makes you pick a square area from it. Anything outside that square is lost. With a group photo or a full-length picture, that usually means cutting people out or chopping off heads and feet.
The fix is to do the "squaring" yourself in a way that keeps everything: shrink the photo to fit inside a square and fill the empty space with a plain colour.
How to make a WhatsApp DP full size (step by step)
- Open WhatsApp DP size in Chrome, Safari or any browser on your phone or computer.
- Choose your photo. It is placed inside a 640 x 640 square using "Fit inside (white padding)", so the full photo is kept and white bars are added above and below (for a wide photo) or at the sides (for a tall one).
- Download the result. On Android it goes to Downloads; on iPhone, Safari saves it to the Files app, and you can use Share > Save Image to put it in Photos.
- Set it as your DP in WhatsApp (steps below). When WhatsApp shows the crop box, leave it covering the whole square and tap Done.
You can change the size from 640 x 640 to something larger, like 1080 x 1080, if you want a sharper picture; keep both numbers the same so it stays square.
How to change your WhatsApp DP
The menus move a little between versions, but the path is generally:
- Android: tap the three-dot menu > Settings, tap your profile photo at the top, then tap the camera or edit icon and choose Gallery.
- iPhone: open Settings in WhatsApp, tap your profile photo or name, tap Edit, and choose a photo from your library.
- WhatsApp on a computer: open your profile (via your profile picture or Settings > Profile, depending on the app version) and click the photo to change it.
Pick the square image you downloaded, keep the crop box covering it fully, and confirm.
WhatsApp DP size
WhatsApp does not publish a required pixel size, but it always uses a square. 640 x 640 pixels is plenty for how small the DP appears; anything from 500 to 1080 pixels square is fine. WhatsApp compresses your DP anyway, so a very large file does not make it look better.
If your photo is huge (for example a 10 MB image from a DSLR), you can shrink it first with compress image, but for most phone photos this is not needed.
The circle problem: keep the edges safe
Even a square DP is shown as a circle, which hides the four corners. With the white-border method, a wide photo sits as a band across the middle of the square, and the left and right ends of that band can be clipped slightly by the circle at its top and bottom corners. Usually this is barely noticeable, but if someone is standing at the very edge of a group photo:
- Run the photo through resize image first with "Fit inside" at a slightly wider shape (for example 1000 x 640 for a wide photo). That adds a white margin at the sides.
- Then put that result through the WhatsApp DP size tool. The photo ends up a little smaller with white space around all sides, so the circle no longer touches it.
Square crop instead of borders
If you would rather fill the whole circle with your face than show the full photo, crop it yourself instead of letting WhatsApp guess. Open crop image, choose Square 1:1, drag the box over the part you want, and crop. Centre the face, and leave space around it, because the circle trims the corners. Our crop tool makes square crops; it does not cut a circle shape, but WhatsApp applies the circle for you.
Blur background DP
A popular look is the full photo in the middle with a blurred, zoomed copy of the same photo filling the background instead of white bars. Our tools cannot do this in one step: the WhatsApp DP tool's padding is always white, and image filters can blur a whole image but cannot place a sharp copy on top of it. If you want the blurred style, use a phone photo editor that offers a "blur background" or "no crop" square layout, then upload the result as your DP.
WhatsApp DP without losing quality
- Start from the original photo, not one that has already been forwarded on WhatsApp, which is compressed.
- Use 640 x 640 or 1080 x 1080, not a tiny size.
- Avoid screenshots of photos; save the photo itself.
For other sites' square and portrait sizes, see our Instagram post size and ratio guide.
Common mistakes
- Letting WhatsApp crop a tall photo, then wondering where the feet went.
- Moving the crop box inside the already-square image, which cuts it again. Keep it at full size.
- Placing faces at the corners, where the circle hides them.
- Using a stretched square, which distorts faces. Always fit or crop, never stretch.
Questions
How do I set a full photo as my WhatsApp DP without cropping?
Turn the photo into a square first by fitting it inside a white square. Open the WhatsApp DP tool, choose the photo, download the square version, and set that as your profile photo. WhatsApp's crop step then has nothing to cut.
What is the WhatsApp DP size?
WhatsApp profile photos are square and shown as a circle. A square of 640 x 640 pixels or larger looks sharp; there is no need for a huge file.
Can I add a blurred background instead of white borders?
Not with our tool; its padding is always white. Some phone photo editors and apps can place the photo on a blurred copy of itself, which you can then upload as your DP.
Why does WhatsApp cut the edges of my DP?
WhatsApp asks for a square and displays it as a circle. A tall or wide photo has to be cropped to a square, and the circle also hides the corners.
