QR Code Generator for Location, Wi-Fi, UPI & Contacts (Free)

Make a QR code for a Google Maps location, Wi-Fi password, UPI payment or contact card, with the exact text to paste. Static codes that never expire.

· 5 min read

A QR code generator for location works by encoding a map link. Open the place in Google Maps, tap Share, copy the link, and paste it into our QR code generator. Anyone who scans the code lands on that exact spot in Maps. The same trick works for Wi-Fi passwords, UPI payments, contact cards and WhatsApp chats: you just paste a specially formatted line of text, shown below.

Our generator makes static codes, which store the information in the pattern itself, so they never expire and do not depend on any website. It runs entirely in your browser, which matters when the text is your Wi-Fi password. You can pick colours and download a PNG at 256, 512 or 1024 pixels.

QR code for a Google Maps location

  1. Open Google Maps and find the place, or drop a pin by long-pressing the map.
  2. Tap Share (on a computer, click Share in the place panel).
  3. Copy the link. It looks like https://maps.app.goo.gl/....
  4. Paste it into the QR code generator and download the PNG.

Use this for wedding cards, shop posters, event invitations and visiting cards.

Using exact coordinates

If you want a precise point, such as a gate or a parking entrance, use coordinates in Google's documented Maps URL format:

https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=28.6139,77.2090

Replace the numbers with your latitude and longitude (in Google Maps, long-press a spot and the coordinates appear at the top). This opens in the Maps app or browser on both Android and iPhone.

A shorter geo:28.6139,77.2090 code also exists, but not every phone and app handles it, so the web link is the safer choice.

Wi-Fi QR code

Phones can join a network straight from a QR code, without typing the password. Encode this text:

WIFI:T:WPA;S:MyHomeWiFi;P:my-secret-password;;

Part Meaning
T:WPA Security type. Use WPA for WPA, WPA2 and most WPA3 networks, WEP for very old routers, nopass for open networks
S: The network name (SSID), exactly as it appears, including capitals
P: The password (leave it out for open networks)
H:true Add this before the final ;; if the network is hidden
;; Ends the code

If your network name or password contains \, ;, ,, " or :, put a backslash before that character. For example, the password abc;123 is written P:abc\;123.

Scan the code with the camera app on an iPhone or most Android phones; a "Join network" prompt appears.

Because the password is inside the code, anyone who can photograph the code can join. Put a guest network's code on display, not your main one. Our generator creates the code on your device, so the password is not sent to any server. For a strong Wi-Fi password, see how long a password should be.

UPI QR code

A UPI payment link uses the upi://pay format:

upi://pay?pa=yourname@bank&pn=Your%20Name&cu=INR

Parameter Meaning
pa Payee UPI ID (VPA), for example ravi@okicici
pn Payee name. Replace spaces with %20
am Amount, for example am=250.00. Leave it out to let the payer enter any amount
cu Currency, INR
tn A note, such as tn=Rent%20October

Names and notes with spaces or symbols must be URL-encoded; paste them into URL encode/decode and use the encoded form. Our guide on URL encoding explains why.

Things to know before printing a UPI code:

  • Your UPI app already has a QR for your ID (look for "My QR" or "Receive money"). That is the simplest option for personal use.
  • For a shop or business, use the merchant QR provided by your bank or payment app. It handles business limits and settlement properly.
  • Test it. Scan it with a different phone and send a small amount before printing hundreds.
  • Double-check the UPI ID. One wrong letter sends money to someone else, or nowhere.

A safety rule worth sharing: you never need to scan a QR code or enter your UPI PIN to receive money. Scanning is only for paying. Anyone who asks you to scan a code "to receive a refund" is attempting fraud.

Contact card (vCard) QR code

To let people save your number and email in one scan, encode a vCard. Put each line on its own line in the text box:

BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:3.0
N:Sharma;Priya;;;
FN:Priya Sharma
TEL;TYPE=CELL:+919876543210
EMAIL:priya@example.com
ORG:Sharma Tutorials
URL:https://example.com
END:VCARD

Phone cameras show an "Add contact" prompt. Keep it short; every extra line makes the code denser and harder to scan from a printed card.

Other useful QR code formats

Purpose Text to encode
Call a number tel:+919876543210
Open a WhatsApp chat https://wa.me/919876543210 (country code, no + or spaces)
Send an email mailto:hello@example.com
Open a website The full link, including https://
Plain text Any text; it is shown on screen when scanned

How to add a QR code in Word or Excel

  1. Make the code in the QR code generator and click Download PNG. Choose 1024 px if it will be printed.
  2. In Word or Excel, go to Insert > Pictures and choose the file.
  3. Resize it by dragging a corner, so it stays square.

Desktop Word on Windows can also generate a QR code with a DISPLAYBARCODE field code, but inserting a PNG works everywhere, including Word on Mac, Excel and Google Docs.

Printing tips

  • Size: at least 2 × 2 cm for a code scanned from close up, like a visiting card; larger for posters read from a distance.
  • Contrast: dark code on a light background. Light-on-dark or low-contrast colours can fail on some phones.
  • Quiet zone: leave a clear margin around the code.
  • Less text, easier scanning: a short share link scans more reliably than a long URL with tracking parameters.
  • Test before printing, with two different phones.

Wondering why some "free" QR codes stop working after a few months? Those are dynamic codes that route through a company's server. Our guide on static vs dynamic QR codes explains the difference.

Common mistakes

  • Getting the Wi-Fi network name slightly wrong. It must match exactly, including capitals and spaces.
  • Forgetting %20 for spaces in UPI names and notes.
  • Displaying your main Wi-Fi password publicly instead of using a guest network.
  • Printing a code too small or in pale colours.
  • Changing the link after printing. A static code cannot be edited; you need a new code if your details change.

Questions

How do I make a QR code for my Google Maps location?

Open the place in Google Maps, tap Share and copy the link, then paste that link into a QR code generator. Scanning the code opens the location in Maps on any phone.

Can I make a QR code for my Wi-Fi password?

Yes. Encode text in the form WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:Password;; and phones that scan it with the camera offer to join the network without typing the password.

Can I make my own UPI QR code?

Yes, with a upi://pay link containing your UPI ID, for personal use. Your UPI app also shows a ready-made QR for your ID. For a shop, use the merchant QR from your bank or payment app, and always test with a small payment first.

How do I insert a QR code in Word or Excel?

Generate the QR code, download it as a PNG and use Insert > Pictures in Word or Excel. Keep it at least 2 cm wide when printed, and do not stretch it out of shape.

Do these QR codes expire?

No. They are static codes: the location, Wi-Fi details or payment link are stored in the pattern itself, so they keep working as long as the information in them is still correct.
