NEET, JEE & CUET Photo and Signature Size: NTA Upload Guide
NTA upload rules for NEET, JEE Main and CUET: photo, postcard photo, signature, thumb impressions and PDFs, with the ranges sources agree on.
NTA exams (NEET UG, JEE Main and CUET UG) generally ask for a passport size photo of 10–200 KB and a signature in JPG, but the signature limit differs between exams and between sources. NEET also asks for a postcard size photo (4 x 6 inch, 10–200 KB) and thumb impressions (10–200 KB), plus certificates as PDFs. Use the ranges below as a starting point, and confirm every value in your exam's information bulletin, since NTA updates it each year.
Upload specs by exam
The figures below are what most recent guides report from NTA bulletins. Where sources disagree, both values are shown.
| Upload | NEET UG | JEE Main | CUET UG |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passport size photo | 10–200 KB, JPG | 10–200 KB, JPG (some guides say up to 300 KB) | 10–200 KB, JPG |
| Postcard size photo | 4 x 6 inch, 10–200 KB, JPG | Not usually required | Not usually required |
| Signature | JPG; guides give 4–30 KB, 10–50 KB or 10–100 KB | JPG; guides give 10–100 KB or 10–50 KB | JPG; guides give 10–50 KB or 4–30 KB |
| Thumb impressions | Left and right, 10–200 KB, JPG | Not usually required | Not usually required |
| Class 10 certificate | PDF, 50–300 KB | Category / PwD certificate if applicable | Category / PwD certificate if applicable |
Why the signature limit is so inconsistent: NTA has changed it across years, and many guides copy older bulletins or mix up exams (for example, CUET UG and CUET PG). The safe approach is to make a signature file around 15–25 KB, which falls inside nearly every range listed above, and then check the bulletin.
Photo rules NTA cares about
NTA bulletins and the guides that summarise them repeat the same points:
- Recent colour photo. NEET has asked for a photo taken in the application year.
- Plain white or very light background.
- Face covering about 80% of the frame, with both ears visible, looking straight at the camera.
- No cap or dark glasses. Regular spectacles are commonly allowed for NTA exams if you normally wear them, but check the bulletin.
- The same photo everywhere. You will paste printed copies on the admit card and other forms, so make several prints of the exact photo you upload.
Some NEET guides also mention writing your name and the date the photo was taken at the bottom of the photo. Follow this only if your year's bulletin says so.
Preparing each file
Passport size photo
Crop to portrait, face centred, then size and compress it with the NEET photo resizer. For JEE Main or CUET, the exam photo resizer has NTA-style presets. Aim for 50–150 KB so the photo stays sharp but under any limit.
Postcard size photo (NEET)
This is a larger shot, usually taken together with the passport photo on the same day, showing face and upper body. Use resize image in cm to get 4 x 6 inch (10.16 x 15.24 cm) proportions, then compress image to 200 KB if needed. You will need a printed postcard photo for the exam centre too.
Signature
Sign with a black (or blue, if allowed) pen on white paper in your running hand, not in capitals. Photograph it flat, crop tightly, and use the NEET signature resizer to land around 15–25 KB.
Thumb impressions (NEET)
Guides agree NEET asks for both left and right thumb impressions, though one widely read guide mentions only the left. Make a clear print of each on white paper, photograph them, and compress each to the bulletin's range.
Certificates (PDF)
Scan your Class 10 certificate and any category, PwD or other certificate, then shrink it with compress PDF to 200 KB. Most guides list 50–300 KB for NEET certificates, so a 150–250 KB PDF is a safe target. If you have the certificate as photos, combine them with JPG to PDF first.
These tools process the files in your browser, so your certificates and photos are not sent to a server.
Live photo capture
Recent NTA forms have started asking for a live photo, taken through the device camera during the application, alongside the uploaded photo. NTA uses it to cross-check identity. Sit in front of a plain wall in good light and look straight at the camera. If your laptop has no webcam, check whether the form supports finishing that step on a phone.
Timing
NTA forms usually open a few months before the exam. For reference, NEET UG registration has opened in February in recent years, JEE Main session 1 forms have opened around October to November, and CUET UG 2026 was held in May. Expect similar windows in 2027, but rely on the official sites (neet.nta.nic.in, jeemain.nta.nic.in, cuet.nta.nic.in) for the actual dates.
Common rejection and mismatch problems
- Photo older than allowed, or different from the one printed on the admit card.
- Selfie-style photo with a tilted face or a background full of furniture.
- Signature in capitals or written with a pencil.
- Thumb impression smudged or upside down.
- PDF over the limit, or a photo pasted into a PDF when JPG was required.
- Postcard photo uploaded in the passport photo box, or vice versa.
Prepare all files in one sitting, name them clearly, and keep a folder with copies. You will need many of the same files again for counselling.
Questions
What is the NEET postcard size photo?
It is a second, larger photo of 4 x 6 inches (about 10 x 15 cm) that NEET asks for in addition to the passport size photo. Guides list the upload limit as 10–200 KB in JPG. You also carry a printed copy to the exam centre.
What is the photo size for JEE Main?
Most recent guides give a 3.5 x 4.5 cm colour photo in JPG, 10–200 KB, though some older guides say up to 300 KB. Aim for 50–150 KB to satisfy both.
Does NTA require the photo to be recent?
Yes. NEET has asked for a photo taken within the application year, and NTA has flagged mismatched or old photos as a problem. Use a fresh photo and keep printed copies of the same one.
Do I need a live photo for NTA exams?
Recent NTA application forms have added live photo capture alongside the uploaded photo for some exams. Keep a device with a working camera handy and read the bulletin for your exam.
